I could tell it got cooler overnight. I woke up to find:

-One kitty under the covers on my arm.
- One kitty under the covers against the small of my back
- One on top od my upper side
-One on top of my lower side
-and one on top of my feet.

Ow. I have definitely pulled something in my back with all the digging and lifting and weed-pulling. It's been there for about three weeks now, and it's more or less impolitely informed me that it's not going to just vanish.

The funny thing is, I actually feel much better for a couple of hours if I seriously pound my back with a baseball bat (well,...

As much of the field as it is possible to clear without mechanical assistance has been cleared- next weekend I start in the a wonderful contrivance called a sickle-mower. For those of you who haven't seen one, it works by having two sets of blades in front that alternate back and forth in different directions. These blades are decidedly mean and vicious looking and move...

Red or green apple trees?

I love South Carolina. My uncle, aunt and cousins live in Loris.

My project to turn a field full of kudzu back into semi-forest is going well. I have over 50% of the field completely cleared, and the four pecan trees are planted. The other four trees are going to be apple trees. I wanted to do pecans and sycamores, but my cousin wants apple trees, and since he's the one with the tractor... well, I'll let...

Bob's doing well. So well, in fact, that she's been rather vociferously telling me she wants out of my bedroom so she can look around. At about 3:30 AM. Which would be fine, except she's apparently forgotten my other guys and they aren't entirely sure what to make of her... which is also not something I can (or should) sleep through. So. Tired.

This weekend...

I've got her home, and she seems much better and much happier than she did before the surgery. Given that my biggest fear was that they were going to destroy what I recognize as her... guess this is my Christmas miracle.
I hope all of you get one when you most need it, too.

Surgery is tomorrow morning. It was a tumor, definitely operable.

There's hope, at least. But this is the brain... it's what makes us what we are. I just hope they can get the bad out without hurting the good too much. They seem to think there's a good chance they can.

Meanwhile, I get to sit and wonder if I made the right decision. Or...

Bob probably has a brain tumor.

There may be hope yet, getting some test results to rule out a few other things... and even if it is a tumor, there's a chance it's operable, and that an operation could have a postive outcome. Many things I will need to weigh.

Anyhow, that's my news.
catdad:
aw... that's unfortunate. I hope it is operable. Are there any medications that can be administered? My uncle is taking a medication for the tumors in his remaining kidney that costs $6840 a month.
dmac:
Poor Bob! frown Hope there's something that can be done.

So, vet trip to the second vet today. She couldn't draw enough blood to do a full panel without anesthesia, but she got enough so they will be able to confirm hyperthyroidism and rule out renal failure... in other words, to tell that she's a candidate for the radioactive Iodide treatment. But they'll need a full panel before the iodide treatment, so it looks like...

So. One of the second generation of my cats, who are really my special babies, is going blind. I'm not sure if it's because of the hyperthyroidism she's developed, which the vet says is mild, but it's obvious she's have some trouble making things out and is not happy about matters.

Talking with the vet, all the potential drug treatments sound alot like Faustian- or...

catdad:
That's too bad. Does the vet have any ideas about the blindness? Aside from the expense (~$1000 + follow-up blood tests at 1, 3, and 12 months), I highly recommend the radioiodine treatment. Terhu gained two pounds back within three months and his thyroid levels were normal within six weeks. He is not a traveler and is very wary of strange people, so having to go to the clinic and be taken care of by strangers was the most traumatic thing for him. He showed no signs of weakness or of not feeling okay during the four (some treatments are eight) days he was there (they had webcams set up in the cattery, so I could go to their website to view him in realtime - except for the lag - during the day and evening). The more challenging part after he was home was the two weeks in isolation from the main part of the house and having to flush all of his waste (or bag it in a double-lined garbage can where it could be kept for three months before normal disposal). And I could only get one hour a day with him for those two weeks. But he was over the trauma and his personality was back to normal within a couple of days of returning home. He was only about 10 when it was done, though. If he had been 13 or 14, I might have opted for medication instead.

Good luck.
catdad:
My kids have never needed to go under for getting their blood drawn. Is that something your vet does? My vet was able to draw Terhu's blood in the back room and bring him right back afterwards. It's been the same way any time any of the kids needed to give blood samples. I'd definitely get a second opinion.

Yeah, I thought there would be some kind of radiation sickness involved, but he seemed to be fine. My understanding is that the thyroid gland absorbs iodine, so it is very targeted in what it affects and only needs a relatively small amount. My vet spoke very highly about it going in (she has never seen a relapse or failure in any of her patients, although she's read about it happening on rare occasions) and I couldn't be happier with the results. Former member Alpo did it with one of his cats at the same clinic where I took Terhu. That clinic guarantees a second treatment for free within the first 12 months if the first one is ineffective or there are signs that it is coming back, but I don't know if that is standard with most of them.

This was a long and not terribly good day.

And it still looks bad.

I miss Loe being here... again, for the second time in all too little time.

Yeah, I saw that Loe was gone again. Guessing she won't be back as quickly this time.

I didn't notice Loe was gone... I'm sorry frown

Thank you for your support - one more time... wink
