Let's walk the scary path....
I just finished reading "The Plucker" by Brom.....which just fucking rules. Its a twisted little horror fairy tale, Toy Story on acid. And as usual, Brom's art is just fantastic.
Brom is the artist I should be, so this book was both a great read and a philosophical kick in the ass. If I could master Brom's use of light, and Wrightson's use of negative space, I would be the happiest artist on the planet. Even if I never sold a thing. Sadly...of everyone reading this, only D'lish will understand what I just said. No offense to the rest of you, but, being the artist is something that only another artist gets. Its a visceral thing that cant be explained.
And I do mean being the artist...not being AN artist. They are vastly different things. An artist is someone who creates. The artist is that person, deep inside, who has to be released to do the art. It's like giving over your soul to this person you dont understand completely, don't trust implicitly, who takes over for as long as it takes. When he's done, I'm left wondering where the time went, and I'm refreshed like after a long sleep, content, yet wary at what he's placed on the page before me. Because he doesnt always do what I set him to do, he is true freedom, and because of that he creates things regardless of what affect it may have on me. I could see my darkest fears in a line, or my deepest regrets in the shading, my hidden desires in the color.
So here....a whole two weeks early...I make my first resolution for 2006.
The art must begin anew.... I have to find that the artist again. He's a bit scary. But, we're old friends, he wont hurt me.
Much.
