I've never posted a blog before on SG but I thought I'd try it out. I'm choosing to talk about Morrissey because as I think of every art form, hobby, thing that I love, admire, subscribe to, do, etc etc., it's the words and melodies of Morrissey that are just plainly 'the best'. First, I think his melodies are among the greatest of any pop musician. I think Debbie Harry and Ozzy are in the category of great too. It's not the voice I'm talking about that is so good from these three singers, it's the melodies they make as they weave around the arrangements of the players. Ozzy's voice is kind of harsh- but listen to how he complements the music- especially on the first 4 or 5 Black Sabbath albums. Debbie does the same thing. She's not the greatest singer in the world, Christina Aguilera can sing better than Debbie. But not many can create a vocal melody better than Debbie (not Christina Aguilera especially). Morrissey is right there at the top of that list in my opinion. Morrissey's words, however, are why I listen though- why people listen or don't listen. Morrissey says what we all feel or have felt at one time or another in our lives. It's why he's written them- so we can agree that we share in the same grief and glory. He says what many don't want to remember or talk about. He says it so we know we're not alone in feeling those feelings. Many people avoid their feelings (inadequacy, despair, hopelessness, etc.) and cringe to have to think of them. People deny feeling. People avoid existential anything and hate that Morrissey doesn't. He says that 'Life is a Pigsty' but promises that despite knowing the 'World is Full of Crashing Bores' he/we are fighting through it and making it (or trying to make it) a more tolerant and hopeful place.
