ok, i know it may sound silly but the very first thing that you need to do is define your genre. not what your book is about but where it fits on the market. all that publishing is doing is making your work a commodity. publishing houses want to know where your book fills a need, where there is a demand. my best advice is go to a local bookstore, maybe even a couple and look around the sections. figure out where your book would fit in the best. whatever the name of the section is, i.e. self-help, cooking, nonfictional history etc. that is your genre & it has everything to do with how you go about getting noticed and published. hope it helps...
(no offense....had to)
