Alright... so I'm not sure about a couple things:

1. What is it that makes the internet such a confessional medium that the fact that I haven't yet made a journal entry here drives me buggy? And why is my biggest worry now that no one will read it...?

2. I'm feeling old glancing around at various folks' comments here and there, especially the "what is feminism?" thread. Somehow I seem to have managed to end up with at least one foot on the other side of the gender politics fence - I've read, pondered (and taught to unsuspecting undergrads) McKinnon, Dworkin, and Daly, and found them at least as enlightening as Le Tigre and their third-wave ike.

As a result... does anyone else feel ambivalent about looking at porn/erotica? On the one hand, I worry about the ways in which my being here, funding even an alterna-form of the industry, does all sorts of fancy and dangerous postmodern things like reinscribing the patriarchy. On the other hand, it's not as if anyone involved here (I hope!) isn't consenting in at least the pedestrian sense of the term, and it's also not as if I'm going doing it behind the back of other relationships in my life (my gf kept asking, "have you gotten an account at SG yet?"). Which makes me potentially paternalistic for worrying that the quality of consent might be questionable...

So, which is it? Am I an oppressor for looking at porn? Or am I an oppressor for thinking that I might be an oppressor for looking at porn?

3. Why do I insist on trying to get involved in every conversation about Israel/Palestine I find myself within earshot of? It's gonna get me killed one of these days, I know it.

You're not old. Maybe you just studied more than some of the people on here...Do whatever makes you happy. SG is an amazing community filled with beautiful people who look a bit different from "normal" people and everyone here I think tries to think for themselves and be non-judgemental. That's what I do at least. The internet is used as a support group here. Hence the reason for groups like the depression one. I am open and honest about every detail of my life including my mental illness and my medical status. Do whatever you want to do and don't worry about what is PC or what others think. You are an individual so just be one and don't worry so much. We can't completely change the world but we can certainly try. Keep it up dude.

1. The internet seems to me to be so, I don't know, available. It's like, if I don't write in my journal, what a waste! It's there, I should take advantage of it (and I'm payin' for it!). As for the second question, no worries - at least 2 of us have now! biggrin

2. YOU feel old... biggrin You were born the year I graduated from high school. I've found a lot of intelligence and creativity here, but also a lot of cluelessness. I have to bite my tongue sometimes because I've been told that what I thought was giving helpful advice was in fact "being judgemental." Oops, my bad, I thought maybe my life experience counted for something. Silly me.

I'm a feminist and proud of it, weaned on Second Wave, consider myself kinda halfway between Second and Third. Shortly after the Third Wave came into being, society went into a reactionary phase that it's obviously still wallowing in. The drunken frat boy is king, and misogyny is the order of the day. Sometimes I catch myself thinking that all this sex-positivity has backfired on us; women reclaimed the pejorative terms "bitch", "slut", "whore" and attempted to turn them into avenues to empowerment, but all the guys hear is, "Whoa, she admits she's a slut! She's asking for it!" :shakes head: Not sure where all this will lead.

I'm very ambivalent about porn in general. Mainstream porn certainly seems fairly oppressive, to women and men alike (not to mention dull, boring, unimaginative and not very erotic). Sites like this certainly seem more "feminist" (although Sean bristles at the suggestion) in that the girls are controlling their own images (but even then not all pics submitted in a set are used, the airbrush still appears on occasion, and there is nary a chunky girl in sight) and no one is forcing them to pose. Also the quality of most sets is very high, and there is a lot of imagination, creativity and flat-out sexiness to be found. So no, I wouldn't say you were an oppressor for being here. If you were, that would mean I am too - and I ain't nobody's oppressor, nor am I oppressed!

3. I give up on trying to even figure out what is going with Israel and Palestine. Can't we all just get along?

I'm a college student myself, but wimpy community college; actually Portland Comm. College is a great school, and I'm enjoying my learning experience (except for algebra... mad ). I'm getting my transfer degree so I can go to Portland State and get a completely useless but spiritually fulfilling Women's Studies degree. I had planned to go on to a Master's in Library Science, but I'm rethinking that one. I'm not cut out to be an administrator. frown Just stick me in the stacks and I'll be happy. smile

Welcome to the site, dude! biggrin
