I really kinda like the super short "stories" that I've written so far. I guess I don't really think of them as stories, though. They feel like photographs in words. I'm going to attempt a proper short story tomorrow. Something a little lengthier and a little more in depth than the things I've put out there so far.
Thanks to all those who have left encouraging words over my past 3 or 4 blogs. I appreciate it greatly. Please keep your $0.02 coming--good and bad. I want to know what isn't working in my little snapshots of small town life.
I'm taking a break from the story telling for a day or two. My head feels full--not in a good way. I can't... Read More
Dust filled the air. He watched the playing field come to life with his friends and the children that he was told to consider enemies. Enemies for the afternoon, at least. The dust had settled from the air into the cooler full of well water. The lid had been damaged and thrown away five games ago. He imagined that the taste of the murky water... Read More
Looks like your brain is getting unblocked to me! Isn't creativity great? I really like this one - the ending is very clever. And the bit with the 'foot ice tea water' - ewww! I'm still squirming.
The hippie jugglers were back at the bus stop outside my office yesterday. I tried to snap a picture from my phone and send it your way (just as a reminder of the PDX circus) but the bus came too quickly and they were gone in a flash. Alas.....
It was August and very hot. The boy sat, facing the wrong way, on an old rusted out tricycle that he was now five years too old to ride comfortably. He sipped a soda and watched from a distance as his grandfather did the work that needed to be done in the orchard.
The old man would say, at random throughout the long summer days,... Read More

I sat on the riverbank watching leaves and trash float past on the muddy water. I named them as they went by.
"You are Me-At-Four-Years-Old,-Eating-Grapes-From-Our-Garden," I said to a leaf. An oak leaf, I think. I can't be sure. I was never very good at identifying foliage.
Me-At-Four-Years-Old,-Eating-Grapes-From-Our-Garden seemed to sigh in indifference as he drifted on down the river and out of sight. I... Read More
I opened the door and she walked in, silently. She stared at the floor as she moved to the chair and took a seat. All I could hear was the sound of her breathing. I realized that in the moment and wondered where the sound of my breath was, but the weight of the situation took me by the throat once again and pulled me... Read More
There is a difference between the activity that I called "drinking" as I was growing up in central Ohio, and the version they partake of on the west coast. While west coast beer is more potent (presumably because it's full of all natural vitamins and minerals that are good for me), "drinking" there seems to be... Read More
The Girl did a birth chart for me tonight... I know these things are designed so that anyone can find little pieces of themselves in it if they try, but it seemed to ring true at every point.
Here is the basic overview:

Endured my first bass lesson Tuesday night. Apparently, my technique isn't as fucked as I thought it might be. Adam (my instructor) was a bit shocked to find that my style had gone from slappy/funky/metal to a more "relaxed" place. I explained that Portland was a very delicate place and that the hipsters might suffer a coronary induced by... Read More
I think those weeks in Portland probably were real, and your move is probably hard for her too. Maybe she just doesn't know how to act now that things are different, or maybe she's acting detached to protect herself.
