Friends Are Odd (Two Tales)
Tale 1) Last week I went to a gig with a girl who is probably my sisters closest friend. Not unusual as I consider her a good friend of mine as well and we both share a love of gigs and clubbing. After the show we decide, in our rashness to head down to a club.
At the the club much drinking is done and even more dancing. Towards the end of the evening I spy a couple of friends I had been unaware were there so I drunkenly bounded over to them. The usual 'how are you?''very drunk' conversation ensued and it was much like these things usually go with people you haven't seen for a while.
The girl ofthe pair then asked whether my girlfriend was here. Being very much single I asked to explain and after some discussion I figured out that she meant the girl who was indeed with me that night.
This I considered to be hilarious as not only is she a very good friend of mine but the idea that we might go out had never even crossed my mind. I explained this and the staggered off to find my friend who I thought would find this as funny as I did.
Not only did she not find it funny she seemed to find it insulting that I did. This threw me somewhat as I am sure she is not interested in me and because pretty much every other guy I know is interested in her. I am still nonplussed that had this view as she is quite stunning and the only reason I'm not interested is that she feels more like another sister to me then a girl I find attractive and thats way more precious in my view.
Tale 2) This weekend I had arranged to go to a gig wth a friend who had once been very close to me but had drifted away a bit over the last few years. The prime reason for this was that he has been touring very hard with his band and although I missed him I was not going to get in the way of him living his dream.
I had got 2 tickets for The Charlatans and had immeadiately though of him for the second ticket as I knew he was a fan. Offered him the ticket and he jumped on it.
I went to see another band he's in on the Friday before the show and we chatted a bit then but there was a big group of us and whilst cool was still not like getting back to the way we were. The same was true at the Charlatans gig the Saturday night.
On Sunday he rang me a said did I want to meet for lunch. Trundled down to the pub a few hours later and it was just like old times. We talked about any old rubbish and it all seemed like the most intelligent conversation ever although it wasn't (by a long shot).
The rest of the day passed much like this and we watched the sun go down on the beach. It was one of the most contenting days of my life. It was incredible how easy I found it to talk to him and to trust him.
What I really want to know though is how I can so completely misjudge a reaction from someone I have seen several times every week for the past few years and then find it so easy to talk to someone who I have barely seen over the same period? Are realtionships chemical? Do some people just click with others or is it something that you can work on?
