hmm i dont how many of you watch the news or read the paper but a friend of mine died recently when a rocket propelled grenade hit the ambulance he was in. his name was paul and he was located in iraq as a reserve for the army. the city he lived in is a very small tight knit community. the kind where everyone knows everyone else and you go to school with the same kids from kindergarden to high school. so his death really has affected the entire city. its pretty weird, like the entire city is in mourning. you cant go anywhere without hearing someone mention his death. it makes things hard because it forces you to keep thinking about it.

you know what bugs me though, false interest. in the last few days theres so many people ive seen who suddenly proclaim that they were best friends. then theres others who use his death as a conversation starter. happy to be the first person to tell others about his death. excited that they know more about it than you or that they were closer. people make me sick. i myself have known him since i was five. we grew up together, swam on the swim team together for like 8 years, went to the same high school, work together, my mom and her next door neighbors still play dominos with his parents every friday night. sure we wernt best friends, but yeah i knew him. weve been friends for a really long time, and yeah i really truely knew him. thinking about it now i think that him and his sister are my oldest friends. ive known them for as long as i can remember.

i swear though if i hear one more person embelishing about how close they were im going to explode. i cant take how fake people can be. how they can just pour out the tears and fake sympathy just to be like everyone else. dont they realize that this is serious. that this isnt some sort of popularity contest. suddently its cool to cry, cool to wear a yellow ribbon on your shirt, and cool to go visit his family. people keep telling me, i saw a picture of you and paul in his living room i didnt know you knew him. and i just keep saying yeah. yeah i knew him. thats all they need to know.

i think that this situation has happened to most people in one way or another. the same thing happned in my town after a one of the super popular football player dies in a horrible accident at the beach a week before we were supposed to graduate high school. i personally did not know him outside of haveing algebra with him jr. year but EVERYONE and their mom swore to be his best friend. but they were more tarnishing his memory by lying. it's a sick world and everyone seems like they want to be part of the action, no matter how grotesque the action is.
