flux

the event in my life that has had the vastest ramifications for my sense of self is easily the three weeks i spent every summer for three years at the duke university talent identification program's summer studies. there i met most of my closest friends, experienced varied heartbreak and the elusive love-at-first-sight, and, most importantly, i learned that you could be cool and smart at the same time. going to nerd camp caused my re-interest in academia after a long early teenage slump, a re-interest that blazes harder and hotter each summer since my first year there. each year was beautiful in its unique way, but i think that first year made the deepest impressions, and the relationships with the friends i made that year have been more stable and more fulfilling than those i made in later years.

surprisingly enough considering their importance in creating this fortuitous Flux out of the sloppy mass of cub that i once was, some of those people i have not seen since that summer, five years ago.
this evening, i'm catching a ride to alabama to spend the next couple of days with some of the smartest and most amazing kids to ever come out of the south. i often say that nothing is better than sex (except possibly enchiladas or robots), but i think i have to concede. nothing is better than seeing old friends.
