The right to bear arms is fundamental to understanding that governments serve the people and the people are not slaves to the government. This right for the people to carry their own weapons is fundamental to our government, for better or for worse.
Thanksgiving is a celebration of survival. In the early years, the europeans who arrived on these shores died quite easily. They were not used to the environment, weather, food, animals, nothing. The natives helped them to acclimate themselves to the harsh environment, and to find food. and also what to grow. Thanksgiving as a holiday celebrates that comming together and feasting of the good fortune of being helped to survive. Today we understand it as a day to gather together as families to bring what we can to the table, and feast, being thankful that we have eachother.
I drove two hours to my auntie's house to visit with her and her husband. Her daughter was there, as were my parents. I don't see them often but I love them dearly.
Today held shinanagans and cider and beer. My friend crawled between a man's legs and also put him into a straight jacket. It was one of the most sexy things I've ever watched two men do to eachother. Unfortunately it wasn't a sexual situation or it wouldda been really good.

While you are correct that a citizens militia could never stand against a modern army, one look at the current political situation in both Iraq and Afghanistan should prove conclusively that governments have every reason to wish their citizens no access to even hunting rifles and dynamite.
Of course by the time those guns come out, it's far far far too late for happy endings. The best you can hope for is a lot of suffering before a pyhrric victory.
