I just got back from seeing Tim Burton's latest, 'Big Fish.' I've got to say, I was excited by the prospect of Burton retuning to his creative roots, but was blown away by how well he blended quirky comedy with a heartwarming story. It was above and beyond what I thought he was capable of, even if it wasn't as outlandish or darkly bizarre as the first films that made me a fan.

There were some people who were so touched by the film that they cried, and I definitely felt a little chill. I could brush it off as a response to my good friend's father passing away, but the film was far too entertaining to categorize those feelings as a side effect of any outside emotion I brought into the theater. Any boy who has a father would probably feel the same.

I also noticed that people who are so cynical that they can't allow themselves to be entertained irk me. It almost seems that in their effort to be "hip" or "mature" they lose sight of the person they were before they became so self-conscious. They lose their child-like, boundless imagination. All to feel superior, or even just to become the status-quo.

In summary:

BIG FISH - biggrin

QUASI-INTELLECTUAL CYNICS - tongue

I saw this, but will not ruin it for anyone who hasn't. It is definitely worth seeing. Especially given what I wrote about Burton above. It's an interesting direction for him to go.

you took the words right out of my mouth with your last paragraph.

every time is see on of those people i desperately want to call attention to their perceived superiority. but in the end i feel it's better to let them alone to pontificate among their own group.

i guess i just hope that if they are ignored enough perhaps they'll just disappear.
