Okay, so I sit for the GRE II (it's the Subject Test to get into graduate school for those not familiar, the one in English Literature in my case) in just over fifty days.

This means I need to get off my ass and focus on preparatory reading (mostly re-reading).

In order to keep myself accountable and maintain a record of what I've covered, I'll...

I never took the subject test. I was all signed up for it. I had been preparing for months. I was poised for success! Then the girl I had been dating/living with for a year and a half decided she was gay and kicked me out ten days before the test. It kind of crushed me at the time. I ended up skipping the test. On the bright side I found out (something I should probably have been more aware of in thhe first place) that all of the schools I was most interested in didn't even require the subject test for their MA programs. Eventually I changed my mind completely about going back to school.

You're a fan of Wheelock too? I have the Latin book, the workbook and the reader all sitting on my floor here mocking me. I keep meaning to dive in and I just cannot bring myself to do it with any sort of regularity. I'll be good for a week or two and get through some, then I get sidetracked and never get back to it.

Speaking of Tolstoy, I think I may move Anna Karenina up on my to read list. I was thinking the other night that it is just wrong that I haven't read it. I love War and Peace, I love all of the shorter stuff I have read by him. I just never got around to reading AK.

Beowulf makes me happy. In about 55 days or so (after the test is over and you go on a few day long bender), you should check out some Icelandic Sagas if you haven't. If you love Beowulf, you're bound to love stuff like Njal's Saga and Egil's Saga.
nopantsdave:
I have the same huge book of Sagas on my shelf, actually.

Tell you what....after you've finished the GRE and can read non-English stuff, we'll tackle Anna Karenina concurrently so we have someone to discuss it with.

I've been listening to a lot of these podcasts over the last few days. If you like good documentaries, good interviews, and wit, I would highly recommend you give them both a listen.

American RadioWorks

Fair Game

I'll try to type up something more substantial this evening or tomorrow morning. Right now I'm struggling to work out a plan of reading to review for the...

Edit: Just finished entering the newly purchased books as well as my scifi/fantasy novels on Library Thing. So I can now stop hunching in front of my computer entering hundreds of ISBNs and scanning dozens of covers. Yay.

Highlights of the last week:

Picked up about 50 books (for about $35) at the annual old book sale in my hometown, apparently the largest such...

It's so much nicer than reading things like, "Oooooo, have you read the new Dan Brown novel?" I appreciate the recommendations. I haven't read any Balzac....mostly because I had no idea where to begin. A lot of times I start with the most highly praised one or I try to go chronologically. But I had no idea with him. Next time I am at the used book store I will have to try to pick some up. Fielding is someone I could probably get into if your description does him justice.

I'd offer some suggestions in return, but you seem like the very rare person who is actually more widely and well read than I.....crazy, you're type are few and far between.

Beth has a week off from her job, so we're both going to spend some time with our respective families. This means I'll be AFK, as it were, for a while. I've got parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and old school friends at home, all of whom I'm long overdue to drop in on, so I probably shan't sit down at a computer, let alone log...

Holy shit was that a long response.....I appreciate the length. It's rather fitting considering what you were writing about. As far as 18th century writing goes....I love Swift and Voltaire. I hate what I have read of Defoe so far. I like Diderot. I've a soft spot for Wordsworth and Coleridge. Other than than that, I'm not well read for that century. I've read a lot of the philosophy of the 1700's, but I am not as well versed in the literature. Most of what I read is either classical Greek/Roman or from about 1850-1950. I don't know when I'll get to Richardson. However, the thought of being able to say I have read two of the longest (if not the longest) novels ever is quite tempting. Traditionally I enjoy long novels. I find myself asking, "Well, what happened next?" too much in shorter works. My biggest concern is that I have never been a fan of the epistle style. That worries me far more than the length.

Thanks again for the lengthy response.

That's cool. What program are you trying to get into, and what are your prospective schools?

Good luck and don't stress out too much with the apps.

The glacial reply rate in all of my groups makes me sad. It seems like there used to be a lot more turnover, real conversations and not just people talking past each other. Maybe I'm just idealizing the memory. A lot of things seemed better on SG four years ago. That's probably me as much as the site.
marlowe:
Yeah, there really wasn't a lot of activity going on in it. My computer had been broken for about a year, and when I finally got one about a month ago and logged on, it was gone. I'm assuming that they assumed it was a dead community taking up space or something.

As much as I would love to create a new one, I haven't really had a lot of time for the internet world lately. Maybe when I get more time I'll start it up again. Plus, once I have more time, there would probably be a lot more events posted.

Hell, I'm still trying to get used to the site as it is now. Being away for a year really confused me!

Well, I fell out of my updating routine for a while there.

This is wholly to blame. People had told me about Library Thing on several occasions, but I avoided it as a time sink. I was right.

I've been cataloging books off and on for most of the weekend. I still have the majority of my sci-fi and fantasy novels to go; but, after...

Domestic tranquility makes all the difference, honestly. Angus and I have our arguments but the second we're together, you can almost always just feel the Generally Content feeling fill the air, and it makes up for a world of annoyances and sadnesses.

The birthday went well, and largely as planned.

The Office couldn't be had at our local Blockbuster, so we got A Prairie Home Companion to re-watch instead. The first time I saw it was in the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, which serves alcoholic beverages during the film. Although I enjoyed it then, I think I appreciated it better without the filter of seven black...

So I'm 25 today. At least I won't have to deal with another milestone-type birthday till I crack my 30s.

It shouldn't be a very big deal. I'll try to get through a full chapter of Wheelock's during the day. This afternoon, the girl and I will probably cash in a restaurant gift card from Christmas and pick up an inexpensive bottle of pinot noir...

Hey, I saw in the Lit group that you actually have read Clarissa and Pamela. I've been wanting to read them for awhile just because they're so long. But I've been staying away from them for the same reason. Are they worth it then? I don't just mean are they readable, but are they actually worth the time that would be required?

Happy birthday, by the way.
