The glacial reply rate in all of my groups makes me sad. It seems like there used to be a lot more turnover, real conversations and not just people talking past each other. Maybe I'm just idealizing the memory. A lot of things seemed better on SG four years ago. That's probably me as much as the site.

Yeah, there really wasn't a lot of activity going on in it. My computer had been broken for about a year, and when I finally got one about a month ago and logged on, it was gone. I'm assuming that they assumed it was a dead community taking up space or something.

As much as I would love to create a new one, I haven't really had a lot of time for the internet world lately. Maybe when I get more time I'll start it up again. Plus, once I have more time, there would probably be a lot more events posted.

Hell, I'm still trying to get used to the site as it is now. Being away for a year really confused me!

Well, I fell out of my updating routine for a while there.

This is wholly to blame. People had told me about Library Thing on several occasions, but I avoided it as a time sink. I was right.

I've been cataloging books off and on for most of the weekend. I still have the majority of my sci-fi and fantasy novels to go; but, after...

Well, I figure I've had three things so I'm overdue for some goodness.

Domestic tranquility makes all the difference, honestly. Angus and I have our arguments but the second we're together, you can almost always just feel the Generally Content feeling fill the air, and it makes up for a world of annoyances and sadnesses.

The birthday went well, and largely as planned.

The Office couldn't be had at our local Blockbuster, so we got A Prairie Home Companion to re-watch instead. The first time I saw it was in the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, which serves alcoholic beverages during the film. Although I enjoyed it then, I think I appreciated it better without the filter of seven black...

So I'm 25 today. At least I won't have to deal with another milestone-type birthday till I crack my 30s.

It shouldn't be a very big deal. I'll try to get through a full chapter of Wheelock's during the day. This afternoon, the girl and I will probably cash in a restaurant gift card from Christmas and pick up an inexpensive bottle of pinot noir...

In the interest of mild self-revelation and keeping in the habit of journal updates, here are a few of my favorite places around the web (actually just links to the various RSS feeds that run across my Firefox address bar that I check daily).

WWdN: In Exile

xkcd

Neil Gaiman's Journal

The New York Times

Bill Moyers Journal

Slate Magazine

Hey, I saw in the Lit group that you actually have read Clarissa and Pamela. I've been wanting to read them for awhile just because they're so long. But I've been staying away from them for the same reason. Are they worth it then? I don't just mean are they readable, but are they actually worth the time that would be required?

Happy birthday, by the way.

Normally I find online shorts to be the lowest form of comedy, but this one really did it for me:

Things that make you go surreal :

olim, adv., at that time, once, formerly; in the future

It's kind of like the same word meaning never and ever. You can mostly figure it out from context, but you wonder about the linguistic path that could have led to this intersection.

In preparation for what is going to be a long, frustrating listen tonight, I found these pieces to be interesting reflections on how things may have managed to go quite so far from what might have been expected almost seven years ago:

Jacob Weisberg's "The Bush Who Got Away"

William Saletan's "The tragic stubbornness of George W. Bush"

This is something I've been thinking about for a good while; and, even though I know of positively no one who reads this (perhaps *because* I know of no one who reads this) I wanted to set it down. It's self-indulgently long though, so I shall place it behind a spoiler.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

I have been a console gamer geek for as much...
