I noticed the thick, brown, waxy coating on my front teeth. I didn't remember how it got there, but rationalized that it must be a kind of protective coating, so I left it there and kept working. Then the freaks came in. I remember only two of them clearly. One was a naked man who I know had to explain to passersby daily the term "body modification." He had partially turned himself into a metal lizard. A tattoo of scales covered his back. He had metal teeth implanted. Implanted, long, sharp, thin metal claws on his fingers. He smiled at me and was very friendly. His appearance was shocking, and so I was a bit disappointed when I found out what made his female companion as strange. She lifted up the back of her white t-shirt to reveal the cover art from a prince album, shining on her back. It was created entirely from sequins which could be screwed out of the skin to reveal a picture with less luster. After showing me their modifications, the freaks left, and headed down the old wooden staircase outside, away from my store.
Then the coating on my teeth became cumbersome and I decided to remove it. It took some tugging but I managed to get it off. I was feeling good about being rid of it, and then I tasted blood. I felt my teeth with my tongue, and to my horror, one of my canines was missing, and I felt a bloody gum in its place. I looked at the brown waxy lump that I had just removed and the tooth was still stuck inside. I felt very distressed at having accidentally removed one of my adult teeth. I looked in the mirror to see how hideous I was. It wasn't horrible, but I felt that I should get to a dentist right away to see if my mouth could be repaired.
I closed up shop and ran down the wooden stairs. Halfway down I met up with the freaks again. I held up the waxy lump with the tooth still stuck in it and my face must have given away my despair. The metal lizard man smiled at me. He bent down and pulled out one of his long metal toenails. "Here," he said, and handed it to me. Evidently this was to be some consolation for losing my tooth. "They aren't implanted?" I asked. "No," he said, "Not on my toes! That's a little extreme for me."
