My first job

@rambo @lyxzen @missy asked us this week: "Tell us about your first job"

Ive had two jobs total in my life. One being I worked at Zumiez for a few months and the other being where Im currently at right now. Since Zumiez wasnt exciting, lets not count that one and get straight to business.

Where I live, there arent many well paying jobs for people that look like myself. During an interview, ive literally been told I would scare the customers. Luckily, I had an option, but it wasn't one I exactly wanted to take. My aunts my boss, and my family isnt really great at being boss like or professional. Lets just leave it at that.

For over 5 years Ive been a direct support provider for the mentally disabled. They are lower functioning adults in a regular house, 6 of them. They are the extremely violent, with many behaviors that need 24 hour care. We bathe, brush teeth, administer meds, make food, clean the house, get diapers thrown at us, get attacked on the daily, and make sure nobody dies basically. It requires a lot of patience and awareness. They are extremely manipulative but it keeps you on your toes! You never know whats going to go wrong that day. Maybe someone decided to pour bleach on the carpet. Maybe someone took all the papers you filed and threw them in the trash. Maybe someones mad they didnt get a soda and decides to throw their blood stained pad your way. You get my drift.

People want to thank me for my service but really, its a job like any other. Certainly I've learned a lot and Im damn good at my job. But realistically, even with my training and education, it will still be difficult to get a job like that somewhere else because of the way I look. It has never effected my job negatively, however you know how life goes. Either way, when I move, Id like to explore more creative job options.

But thats my job! I recently got a raise (yay! My boss passive aggresively likes to express she never does that) but I'm most likely leaving in a year (hopefully). Shout out to all the caregivers out there :)

I love that you're so matter-of-fact about your job, which I'm sure you're great at! Hard to believe that anyone should think you might scare customers...enchant them, seems more likely! Any word on Bloomed Hearts getting FP?

To live in a world where our abilities matter more than our appearance...It's a lot better than it used to be, but we're not there yet. I've been fighting that fight for many years.
