If it was just me, or even ESPN complaining, I would grant you a difference of opinion. South African broadcasters actaully apologized. The BBC was livid, but soon, they had something else to be angry about. I took calls from Mexico and Uruguay, and they said that the commentators there said the ref was wrong as well.
FIFA made the mistake of determining regions should have refs. That started in Asia. Think back to the first Brazil Turkey game. The ref was a disaster, but continued to get games, because he was from the right region. While we are there, think back to the game in the first knock out round between the US and Mexico. Good times.
It is an easy group. If the US could put two halves together like they did in qualifications, we would have the four points we legitimately deserved today. No, no NFL replay, and I would not want it in soccer. If FIFA had used the Europa League system, there would not have been a problem.
On a play like that, the refs need to talk to each other. Instead, he did not even talk with the players. According to FIFA, the refs need to be able to communicate with the players. According to the US players, he could not. He was simply not ready for prime time. He was way to qucik on the cards, for instance, even if almost all them went to Slovenia. You can bet FIFA will have one of the top refs at the Algeria match.
