I nodded. “That’s exactly what they’re going to do and they’re going to make sure we know how magnanimous they are while they take the booze and the gas and fuck everyone.”
“So why have the meeting with us?”
I looked at the shadows outside. “That little matter of conscience. Same reason those boys outside are making sure we don’t leave or get killed. They already heard him, now they want to hear us, not so we can change their minds, but so that we can present them what they need to see so they can wash their hands of it all. It’s what every great society needs so it can keep the trains running on time, those every day calamities that grease the wheels.”
Sam shook his head at me, “So that’s it, it’s over?”
I nodded again, “That’s it. We’ll finish every last bit of that food, wash up, make everything clean and tidy. We’ll go to their meeting and offer up everything including our virgin assholes and watch them turn it all down beside the booze and when all is said and done, no matter what they offer us besides their hospitality it won’t be enough to get us out of this. We should have stayed in the prairies.”
Sam looked at the shadows of the guards and then at me. “Should have, could have, would have.”
