I think whats sticking with me most this year is what i learned about america. Last year I would have dismissed the US as an all but ruined society, most certainly on its way out- then after moving to colorado in January of 13 i spent the better part of year exploring the united states, and what i found was something quite different. While of course i did find some evidence of the ruin and certain disturbing sociopolitical factors, what i noticed more was something less obvious.
Under the surface in the cities i traveled to, people in my generation were buzzing. Realizing that the "get good grades+ go to college= get a good job." equation sold to us in the 90's was simply no longer applicable, we've been sent back to the drawing board.
The darkness of the early 2000's culminating with the devastation of the 2008 crash, has forced us into introspection. Coming of age at the exact moment that the world as we knew it collapsed around us, has had a very curious effect. You hear it all the time on television- there are no jobs for those graduating from college, 20 somethings moving back home, blah blah blah. But some of us have decided to move beyond hopelessness- to make our own way in the world outside of the corporate structure.
In little pockets around the country i have found young people celebrating art and culture, healthy food and farming, pioneers in natural medicine- we are the phoenixes rising from the ash for a new american dream.
I wish I had started this sooner, but my goal in 2014 is to document these stories.
