Let me tell you about something I used to do when I was a kid.
After seeing the movies 'Night of the Living Dead' and 'Halloween' before age 5 (!), I silently vowed to make my own plan of action should a violent murderer chase or hunt me down.
Cause you know, that really was going to happen and all.
My first concern was getting cornered in a room by the perpetrator. Underneath my yellow canopy bed, I cut out a hole large enough for only me to crawl through. That way the person couldn't see me if they looked under the bed. In rationalizing this, I quickly got over my fear of the clown under the bed in the movie 'Poltergeist'.
My parents used to leave me alone in front of the console TV a great deal of the time. In addition to partially being raised by B-movie horror flicks, I think that Masters of the Universe, Three's Company, and also Inspector Gadget figured in there as well. Oh, and also 3-2-1 Contact.
But back to my plans of action. Besides the bed arrangement, I also had methods of telling if someone had been in my room before I got home from school. You know, if they'd be waiting to ambush me? I cut just a few hairs from my Barbies, and would strategically place them just underneath the door when I'd leave.
Not having a definite plan with (should I invoke the wrath of) the supernatural used to bother me immensely.
I also remember watching so many horror movies that I'd yell, "Don't open the DOOOOORRRRR", just as camp counselor bimbo in a bikini so-and-so would be getting slashed, and her stupid drunk bf would stand there, mouth agape, before he too was julienne sliced into an hors d'oeuvre.
So yeah. Explains a lot now, doesn't it?
The movies I remember being disturbed by the most are Night of the Living Dead, The Shining, Carrie, Funhouse, It's Alive, Rosemary's Baby, Color Me Blood Red, and I Dismember Mama.

the movies that i haven't been able to block from my memory from childhood are Cujo, Alien, and Jaws. jaws fucked me up. swimming pools at night were scary places after that. never mind that sharks live in the ocean and would not be in a swimming pool in the desert. the birds and the exorcist did some damage as well.
