Cliches... they dominate our existence. I could go into the philosophical question of whether there is original thought, but whatever it is that I can say to you to support my current point of view, I can't truly prove. So I won't bother.

But I am fascinated by cliches. I'm intrigued that a person can say something (could've been original, could've been something they've heard somewhere else or at least was inspired by something else to say) that other people "catch" on to and then you have a multitude of people saying or doing the same thing.

It's easier to start new cliches when you have a popular forum: network TV, a press conference, a song, etc. In fact I think it's easier now more than ever because of this short attention spanned nation we live in... wait where was I... oh yeah short attention span- everybody wants the newest, coolest things before everyone else. It seems that nearly everyone wants to be hip, so people seem more receptive than ever to all this trendsetting and all these fashionable urges.

That's where I think about cliches. Cliches have been around since the beginning of time, MTV has not. Cliches were started by people who never get credit for what small nugget of pop culture they gave birth to, but I betcha all of you can remember who sang that damn Thong Song, or which company struck gold with their "what's upppp" commercials. Wait a second, who did sing that Thong Song? Ahh, I'm sure it's in there somewhere.

Anyway, cliches make me smile. They make me upset, they make me content. They make me horny, they make me uneasy. They make me look at things more carefully, they make me take things for granted... see interesting stuff!

Here are some of my favorite cliches (good and bad):

-Brunettes with glasses who are highly intelligent
-Blondes with boobs who are not
-No pain, no gain
-The cheesy 80's hair band ballad video while on tour (bonus points if it's in black and white!)
-Every cloud has a silver lining
-1 game at a time (sports cliche)
-To be or not to be
-What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
-Haste makes waste
-What goes around comes around
-Life's a bitch
-Money is the root of all evil (I wonder if this has anything to do with that money growing on trees line)
-Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
-It takes two to tango (of course it does... I dislike obvious cliches- it takes 1 to masterbate)
-Have your cake and eat it too (having it is to eat it, and to eat it is to have it)
-Out on a limb
-Curiosity killed the cat (sometimes it does, dammit)
-Barrel of laughs
-The whole enchilada (So many food cliches, so little time)
-Cream of the crop
-High and dry (that's true, I'd rather be low and wet wink
-Beside the point
-Old as dirt (No one should ever be insulted in such a way)
-Clean as a whistle ???
-I've got my eye on you - who really does that with 1 eye?
-You would be late for your own funeral (They make that seem like it's a bad thing, I don't know about you, but I want to be REAL late for my funeral)
-The more things change, the more they stay the same

What are some of yours, if any?

Hope everyone has a fun, relaxing weekend.

Remember, all work and no play makes Eddie a dull boy.

Thanks. smile I am restless, incredibly so. But maybe I'm finally restless enough to do something about it now. Oh, and I definitely didn't drink enough to be hungover. Geez, I'm not that pathetic, to be hungover after three drinks. wink
