Here's something new...

As work was winding down today I had a little chat with a friend of mine in San Francisco. We talk on the phone once in a great while, but we talk on IM a lot. Here is the conversation from today on IM:

(for reading purposes I am eddiegoofball, he is enthio)

enthio: damn...
enthio: i just got a sudden weird craving

eddiegoofball: for?

enthio: really badly, i all of a sudden, want to be at an outdoor concert in the summertime drinking cheap beer & hanging out with friends
enthio: not like in the square kinda thing or at a concert hall... but like, in a huge outdoor field
enthio: with lots of sun & girls everywhere & cheap beer & loud noise
enthio: ahhh
enthio: it's good inside my head, i think i'll stay there a while

eddiegoofball: cheap beer...

enthio: i know

eddiegoofball: I'm past that point in my life. The cheap beer part.

enthio: i dont usually like cheap beer
enthio: but man... something about cheep beer in plastic cups at outdoor summer concerts
enthio: i guess i'm just feelin kind of pent up & my wild side is beginning to get restless

eddiegoofball: uh-oh
eddiegoofball: you should come play scrabble with us on Saturday

enthio: sounds like fun
enthio: u old fart

eddiegoofball: only 3 weeks older than you man

enthio: ya well... only as old as u behave
enthio: my "wild child" isn't exactly tame yet (and probably never will be)

eddiegoofball: So what can you do?

enthio: find some crazy shit to do once in a while
enthio: crazy but harmless

eddiegoofball: Is that a contradiction?

enthio: it's not angry angst like it was when i was a kid, more just like restlesness and boredom
enthio: kind of an... ornery feeling

eddiegoofball: I get that a lot when things begin to feel repetitive and pointless.

enthio: ya

eddiegoofball: like lately

enthio: i hate repetitive and pointless

eddiegoofball: that's life though.
eddiegoofball: there are 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week. Every Friday will be a Friday.

enthio: eh, i'm not so ready to just give up

eddiegoofball: All we are doing is blending with our environment.

enthio: gotta stir shit up once in a while. throw a little spontineity in there
enthio: ya, well, i've always had a rebellious spirit
enthio: been really diggin the idea of pirate radio lately

eddiegoofball: arrrrrrr! Pump up the Volume!!!
eddiegoofball: Everything around us is repetitive so it is easy to follow suit and flow, but there are those who are not ignorant to life's repetition. There are those whose eyes are open and they can't look at the same thing all the time and think the same thoughts. I'm not saying it is better to be one or the other, I'm just making an opinionated observation.
eddiegoofball: ignorance is bliss

enthio: nah, ignorance is death

eddiegoofball: No, I use ignorance as a metaphor to describe those people who do the exact same thing for 30 years. Who do not really hunger too much to shake stuff up. Some people love predictibility and repetiion. I also mean no negative context in the way I say "ignorant". They are what they are. Ignorant to the many diversions of the dreamy mind that can either be the salvation or ruination of the soul. I mean, I could be a rock star and get sick of it in 3 years.

enthio: Of all the frictional resistances, the one that most retards human movement is ignorance, what Buddha called "the greatest evil in the world." The friction which results from ignorance can be reduced only by the spread of knowledge and the unification of the heterogeneous elements of humanity. No effort could be better spent. -- Nikola Tesla
enthio: i get sick of just about anything given enough time

eddiegoofball: I admire a person who can do the same job for most of their life. I wake up almost daily wanting to make a change.

enthio: i think what keeps most people doing the same shit for so long is a combination of complacency and fear of change

eddiegoofball: fear... yeah that's a possibility. I also think of again, the ignorance of not knowing there is an enormous world out there if they want it. Everyone has different needs. Perhaps I want too much...

enthio: it seems to me that ignorance stems more than from anything else, from an utter lack of intellectual curiosity
enthio: an unwillingness to learn something just for the sake of learning it.

eddiegoofball: Maybe there is more than just simply the 2 sides I've created: the "enlightened" and the "asleep"...
eddiegoofball: There's the Dante from Clerks category... perhaps the worst combination of the 2 extremes, I know that there is an exciting world out there, but I'm too afraid or stuck to go explore it. I'm afraid I currently fall in here.
eddiegoofball: I'm reminded of what I think is a Yogi Berra quote: "Potential means you haven't done nothing yet"

enthio: who

eddiegoofball: He was a great Yankees baseball player who said a lot of contradictory and entertaining things.
eddiegoofball: Anyway maybe I'm the one who's ignorant...

Then I was reminded of this Emerson quote which is stuck in my brain the last few months and that I posted here before:

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesman and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

What to do, where to go?
The car's full of gas but out of wheels.
This fire burns me constantly until I try to put it out, and then it subsides until I reach a comfortable level of suffering.
My mind and heart are in conflict. They have so much to say, but I'm afraid they're not speaking to one another and once again I'm caught in the middle of this uncivil war of logic and instincts.
These dreams are but a blueprint until I cast the first stone into this reality of give and take.
A fight I can't win?
Will the fight even begin?
Please someone wake me when it's over because I can't bear to watch 2 people I love exude so much hate in a hurtful manner to nothing short of a stalemate.

My soul doesn't feel so great lately. Do I expect too much of myself, or do I produce too little? I will ponder this tonight until slumber with full knowledge that while I'm trying to figure out if I'm doing enough with my silly life, there are tens of thousands who just lost theirs. frown

hugs to all...

i agree that ignorance is death. i think that you may be talking about two sides of a behavioral coin - apathy or satisfaction. either can make someone able to live in a similar pattern for 30 etc. years, you know? so, what would satisfy you? i ask myself daily whether i expect too much or produce to little - it is THE question, although you have uttered it MUCH more succintly. what a fascinating conversation. marvelous.

so, what brilliant thoughts are percolating as a result of this exhange? smile

those all sound like noble plans - a fantastic way to start the new year indeed. do you have big plans?

i am alright - i've been nursing the plague death in my body, but am recovering (finally), so the new year should be peacefully welcomed in.

happy new year! kiss
