Just saw Hotel Rwanda the other day with the Amnesty International people. Its one of the few meaningful movies out there. Its similar to Schindlers List. Basically genocide is happening and the main character saves as many people as he can (about 1000) by sheltering them in his hotel. Anyone beyond the hotel walls faces almost certain gang rape and death. Interestingly enough, he makes a point NOT to keep a list

Its so much more relevant to the modern world than Schindlers List. Genocide no longer resembles the Holocaust and probably never will. Foreign observers, world aide organizations, United Nations peacekeepers and the world press were all there. We now get beautiful color photographs, satellite phone interviews, and up-to-the-minute body counts. In a way, its worse since we can no longer claim ignorance.

I love how world aide organizations, particularly the Red Cross, were portrayed. Theres no way they could stop the mass murders but they still risk their lives to help. Theyre scared as fuck but theyll still act for other people. Is there anything nobler? Thats another reason this movie is so great. Its not just a gloomy movie about the cruelty of war but also about what normal people can do. Lessening the pain is within our reach and there were so many people doing exactly that.

Anyways, I recommend you see the movie. ITS REAL so be warned, there arent beautiful stars doing improbable plot lines.
