I was listening to my one of favorite podcasts this morning, and they were doing a review of the new Star Wars movie. And their review was good, all 3 members of the panel liked it.
What annoyed the shit out of me was how they kept referring to the prequels with this burning visceral hatred. Granted, the prequels weren't great. They started out bad, and got better, but they cannot be called great. But I refuse to react, towards those movies, like I would if I saw Chris Brown slap my mom.
See, I've got grown people shit to do. I don't have the time or energy to carry on like this was the holocaust of the movie world.
THE PHANTOM MENACE WAS 16 YEARS AGO!!!!! LET IT GO ALREADY!!!!
Now, just to put this into perspective for you. I saw the very first Star Wars movie when I was 3 days old. I was taken to the theater in a baby carrier..... so I've been a geek since birth. I have spent thousands of dollars on Comics, collectibles, and DVDs over the years. I have a tattoo from one of my favorite TV shows. So it's not like I have never dove, head first, into the deep end of the geek pool. But a bad movie has never made me want to give up on life.
Now, I have seen some shit movies. 100s of millions of dollars were poured into every Transformers movie, but zero Fucks were ever given to whether or not they would be good.
Punisher: Warzone was a steaming turd that wouldn't flush. It had a great opening scene, but if you were in that theater for longer than 10 minutes, you at least considered calling in a bomb threat.
And don't get me started on the Schumacher Batman movies. They were the equivalent of dropping acid, while huffing copier toner in the janitor's closet.
BUT!!!!!! At no point did these movies ruin my life. I am in no way scarred from these movies. I dont need to seek help for any signs of PTSD. These movies came out, I hated them for a day or so... then moved on with the rest of my life.
No, this is indicative of a much bigger problem. Something that I was talking about, at least, 10 years ago.
YOU CAN'T BE A GEEK..... AND A DICK, AND EXPECT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!!
For Fucksake, pick a struggle. Each option has its own unique challenges. You might be ridiculed for everything you are into. Or people could hate you with every breath you take.....Pick one.
Being angry doesn't make you any less of a geek. And being a dick will never make you right. So pick a struggle, get over yourself, and please realize that if a movie ruined your life, your life probably sucked long before that thing was ever greenlit.
