I'm going to the cemetery since they're doing a memorial service and so I can go see pop pop..
It feels so weird that it's just been over a month already. I still don't think it's fully sunken in yet.
Maybe today it will, who knows. I'm already too somber for my own good.
He was a ww2 vet. he was a drill sergeant and also trained men to do things he never, ever wanted to talk about or hope our country would ever have to go through again. Amazingly, i cannot ever recall a time where he raised his voice to myself and my sisters, yet he kept us in line and he brought the family together. He taught me many many things that at one point i think i really shook off for face value. He's getting a cigar and a small bottle of Jack today but i don't think i'll ever be able to thank him enough.
Sure, the patriotic bullshit may be out of control, but there is still awful shit going down and there are people stuck in it, voluntarily and involuntarily. People shouldn't have to die that way. And i can only hope that most of them make it back home, and go peacefully like my poppop did, after a really fulfilling life. So take a second today before you shove all that processed meat down your gullet or sit out in the sun until you get cancer and think about the people who paid a much bigger price than we have to for fucking gas prices.
