So i just got back from the midnight screening of Cloverfield.
I enjoyed it very much so.
May i point out i am a sucker for monster flicks. good, bad, awfully good and so bad it's good.
this is a bit long. look under the spoiler for some specifics but i SWEAR i do not give anything major away and should not spoil anything if you plan on seeing it since i know some of you have lives, unlike myself.
also, if you haven't seen it yet, i wouldn't look it up on wikipedia. while there are no monster pictures (yet) it does tell you every fucking thing that happens. so if you don't want to spoil it in that regards, just stay away for a bit.

to figure out what category to place this movie in is all part of how you go in to see it.
if you've followed the hype as an average person would and take it for face value, i truly believe that you will leave there satisfied.
if you're an asshole that needs everything explained to you. the when where why of the monster, too bad so sad, you'll probably be the pissed off moron who sat behind me.
if you were a total geek and followed all the viral marketing, sorry, but none of that is even MENTIONED in the movie. yea, they got you good to fill those seats but its still a fun ride.
if you're like me and spent way too much time looking very deeply in hidden parts of the internet and already know what the monster looks like and everything thats going to happen, trust me, you're still going to like it because just reading it does it no justice.
with that said, i'm not going to even describe what it looks like. the cgi probably could've been better, but given the budget i was quite please. and yes, you get a very gratifying shot.
and no, it is NOT godzilla, Cthulhu(while in theory that sounds fucking awesome, be honest with yourself and you gotta admit, you'd think it was really fucking stupid if thats what it was. seeing that would probably ruin lovecraft) and it is NOT a lion.
there's gore, there's creepy little fast spiderlike fuckers, there's explosions, there's mass chaos and there is also a very shakey camera at times. so be prepared for that. seriously. not as bad as you might think but it does feel tedious when you're looking for a good shot of the beast and figuring out whats happening with the characters and then you're being bounced all over the place.
Summery: take it for face value. it's a monster movie, things get fucked up. basically the perspective of the people running from said monster instead of the people trying to destroy it. and yes, there is a building collapse very similar to 9/11 early on but really, it's nothing to give a fucking stink over. and going in with super high expectations ( there was a huge group of kids wearing tshits. come on) will probably make you feel really stupid for wasting your life since Transformers.
p.s. if you were at the lowes in new brunswick tonight, yes, i was that asshole who made the comment at the end "awww i love happy endings". yes, sorry, my bad. but you laughed.
