Evening, folks. I've begun what I hope will be a daily routine: copying out a paragraph by an author whose style I admire. I just copied the first paragraph of "On the Quai at Smyrna" by Hemingway. I once heard this was a good way to warm up, or to better understand an author's style. I agree. It's like acting. Anyway, it's better than doing...

Great method. I think our own styles are better developed when we borrow other artists' techniques.

Not plaigarism, just trying out another voice.

Eliot once said, "Immature poets imitate, good poets steal." Damn straight.

What a finicky bitch I feel like I've been lately. No matter--last night was wonderful. Alex came over with her guitar (poor cracked, hockey taped thing!) and we played a bunch of Gram Parsons songs and drank beer in my kitchen. I felt like a musician for the first time in a very long time (and I sounded like one too).

So now I've got...

Well, the bug never came. Or at least it never came while the lights were on, which is just as good.

Am I the only person annoyed by people who don't know the difference between "their" "there" and "they're"? Or "who's" and "whose"? They're completely frickin' different words, for chrissakes! Nobody can go "their". "Whose" on first doesn't make any goddamn sense.

But on the...

I am horrified. There are bugs in my building. Not just any bugs. Not ants or spiders. No, nothing you'd recognize. They are what I call carpet-crawlers. They're multilegged little beasts with inch-long bodies and a couple dozen legs that kick and kick even after they've been separated from the body by a frenzied whack with a shoe or magazine. These little bastards are fast,...

Watching Magnolia for the umpteenth time today. I'm glad I'm no less affected by this time than any other. I mean, I see where it's got problems; there's a stretch of twenty minutes in the middle that really sag, but it's got heart and vision that makes up for all of it.

* * * * *

I'm beginning to seriously consider my employment options....

anyhow, i really feel you on the father/family/parenting thing. my father just started his second family (oh boy) a few years ago. my sisters (both two years older than me) started their families. i'm surrounded by budding families, and observing them, i find myself saying to myself, "i would never do that." i have no clue as to what i might do though...
anyhow...good morning, writer. biggrin

just gotta say hello to a fellow xtc'er. they are one of my all time favorite bands. i haven't heard much of the apple venus stuff, i'm still stuck in a timewarp with waxworks and skylarking etc. andy partridge paints the most beautiful word pictures. *smiles* i love xtc.

I'm such a fraud it's disgusting. I bought the White Blood Cells by TWS. $10 (that's Canadian, folks: about $6 USD). I got a ride to the mall with Alex and Heather: in the car they've got Elephant on. We start talking about TWS, and it's SG's boards section all over again. Except no one sticks up for Meg. And no one professes a venomous...

Fuck. New upstairs neighbours with an enormous sound system and terrible taste in music. Dance music. Not "electronic" or "trance" or whatever. Nothing that remains interesting if you pay it any attention. Just straight up repetitive and totally unimaginative "gino beats". It's shit DJs don't even listen to in their spare time. I'm trying to listen to music here, and play my guitar fresh back...

Well, it's off. I've sweated my ass off in revision--with much readerly feedback from my chickie. That training in dramaturgy makes her an attentive and curious reader, which is as helpful for me as it is stressful. She presses me to tell her parts of the story that aren't on the page, not because she wants to hear them or because they're important for a...

I can say that Jack White does have skill when it comes to guitar. As far as vocals go, I can't say I particularly like his. to call them "Cobainish" was taking it a bit too far though **ha**. I totally agree with you though when it comes to Meg, the drummer. Que horrible.

Draft complete. 1500 words exactly. I think I'll go ahead and enter it in B+A's Urban Fiction contest. I've got the $ for the entry fee, and it's open only to unpublished writers, so I've got a good shot. Jesus, I've been on the brink of publication a long time. Not really but it feels that way. Not even a year since things started looking...
