Thank Jebus for deadlines! Without someone breathing down my neck I get nothing done. And deadlines keep me away from here.

Except for now.

Going.

You know I had no idea what you were talking about until I went back and read what I typed. What...the...fuck? I'm just going to leave it there, as a permanent record of my brash devil may care (lazy) attitude.

It's all about the science, yo.

I'm gonna let the dust settle on the move and go see the Cure. Then I'm going to become very interested in your work schedule. I'm thinking towards the end of the month-y.

Keep me posted.

Just a couple of quick public service announcements:

1) Look, we know my girlfriend's new hair is pretty. But when she's ordering a cappuccino just get her the fucking coffee. You've never seen hairdye before? Noticing her hair won't make her have sex with you. Nor, streetpeople, will it make her give you money. It's store-bought pigment.

2) Girls who date my brother and then...

Guitar back from the shop. Oddly, the final bill to bring it into top playing shape, after years of buying upgrades for various parts (at this point, only the body and one strap button are original) and having them installed at a cut-rate by my intrepid guitar teacher (that's teacher, not repairman) back when I didn't yet know that you can never pay too...

Fat, fat chipmunk malaise. Perhaps glandularly caused.

Actually, the butt makes only rare guest appearances in sets. She is shy, like Garbo.

Now you have to get YOUR ass over here and "jam" in the new "studio."

Funny 'it's a small world after all' tidbit:

I got into Scofield because the Sampler player from Soul Coughing appeared on his 'Bump' album, and I wanted to check it out.

"Sampler player?" you ask.

Mark Di Gli Antoni (if I'm spelling it correctly) is a classical composer who gets a lot of his sounds from recording his compositions, and then processes the hell out of certain slices and used that glorious noise as backgrounds in SC songs. The results were eargasmic.

I got a pile of quality listenin' done to that album (I also own Uberjam and Up All Night but am less familiar with both), although I have to admit my jazz heart forever belongs to the inimitable Charlie Hunter.

I know what you mean about having gaping holes in the technique. I've been playing for probably about twelve or thirteen years. I've done time in many original bands, been a sideman, a stage musician, a session player, and faked my way through virtually any genre you can imagine with generally successful results.

But still, after all this time, I'm still very heavily the little alt kid who spent most of his high school years spending endless hours woodshedding on Soundgarden tracks. Bombastic and often clumsy rock bozoing will often belie the thousands of hours I have invested in my instrument. I find myself relying on too many stock tricks and licks. There is a bit of a rut going on in the playing... and so maybe a little jamming with some new cats might be just what the doctor ordered, you know?

My favourite guitarist of all time, incidentally, is former Bowie sideman Reeves Gabrels. If I could do a tenth of what he does on the instrument, I could die happy.

If there was ever a doubt concerning my ability to see to completion this project of developing a complex and convincing "artistic temperament", let it have the week off, for this afternoon I successfully tackled tenet 9a: "Is bad with money".

Today, conscious of the enormous rent increase I face in November and the impending due date on a couple of credit card statements I...

i'm heavy handed on choices i don't make personally at times, but then i suppose everyone is - it's our way of justifying one path or the other :]

In the paragraph where you equate a promotion with the birth of a child you switch from talking about the emotional weight something carries in art to what it would mean if it happened to you.

precisely why i shouldn't have kids. - there's a consistency in the rest of the post though, i look at relationships, life phases, everything from the standpoint of what will get created out of it rather than how it feels too often. it's probably a flaw that shouldn't spawn, heh.

That'd be a like a marriage's high point being the wedding--why go on after that?

from my standpoint childbearing is exactly like having the wedding being the high point though. the first few years they think you're everything - godlike even. then, you each change in your unique ways, but as the years go on they become distant. eventually they move out, and if you're lucky you stay or become friends again, but it's never quite the same.

as far as the leaving-something-behind angle, refer to the creationist flaw :]

It's the stuff that comes after the huffing and puffing and cursing and bleeding and ice chips and hot water and cigars that attract me to the endeavour of parenthood

yeh - definitely why i won't knock someone for having kids that values all the stuff after "the big moment". my rhetorical bullshit and life theory all pretty much center around finding the one element of suffering in your life that you enjoy. it's not findin the candy you like, it's about findin the bruises you like i wager. the starving artist angle is just more alluring to me than the attentive parent. largely cause i'm self absorbed and i suspect rather unimaginative tongue

The fact is, the stupids are fertile and they're multiplying. Something must be done.

see this is where the well-intentioned breeder is smarter than i. i just wanna try and change the stupids. i used to fixate on the past of future too much, now i'm obsessed with the present or something.

And I'd be an awesome dad.

tell me somethin i don't know smile

This urge to reproduce is probably just a way to distract myself from shortcomings in other creative arenas. Viva la deception du self!

better than telling yourself you're a decent artsit i wager EL SUICIDO LOCO

Because he did not own one, I gave my little brother my dictionary. It served me well for 10 years, and now its yellowing pages are his to thumb.

I've gone over to consult it three times since my dad picked the boy up this afternoon. Old habits...

The gift was partially an excuse to convince myself to buy a big hardcover Oxford.

Clearly,...

I found a grey hair the other day. Two, actually.

First person to use the word "distinguished" will be shitting teeth tomorrow.

Haven't heard from the guitar shop yet, though it's been two weeks. I'm taking that to mean they're taking their time to give it extra lovin' care.

You're right. That was a dull journal entry, poem and all.

Today I met a "Buddhist Nun". I didn't think there was such a thing. Maybe something gets lost in the translation. Or not--she spoke with an accent that was worn pretty thin and hard to place, though I want to guess it was Australian.

Come to think of it, she reminded me of Olivia...

Thanks matey.

Yesterday was really hard. Today was easier. My eyes wouldn't focus in the morning for some damn reason. Got a lot out of my system yesterday, mainly in sexy sexy snot form. I'll probably be fine until she starts packing, methinks.

I used to have a running list of "reasons guitars are better than girls". Top reasons included that a guitar doesn't get mad if you play another guitar, you can easily have as many guitars as you want, and you don't get in any trouble if your best friend walks in on you and his guitar.

Etc.

How do you write a letter asking for someone to consider publishing your work in their humble little literary journal when what you really want to say is, "I know you're not going to read this, and I think that stinks, and no, I haven't taken any creative writing classes, so no, there's no B-list author you can put into your debt by publishing me--and...

You could praise the work of some other authors they've published, so that they know you have good taste (read: appreciate THEIR taste) and are familiar with their journal. Kissing ass and knowing your enemy can sometimes work miracles.

I have a feeling that an attempt to accomplish something these days, no matter how major or minor, will always require a certain amount of apathy.

I say submit it in a formal voice. I also wish you luck! Getting something published one day has been a tiny personal dream of mine. smile
