Owsley “Bear” Stanley was the Grateful Dead's sound engineer in the early days, and also a chemist who made a large portion of the LSD that was being consumed in the United States in the 1960s. LSD was legal in USA until 1967. Owsley came up with the bear idea; based on his nickname.
