It's after 5AM where I am right now. I've been up all night struggling to break through a self inflicted creative obstacle course. On a quest to break free from the senseless prison of my own mind. But I'm not here this morning to recount the backstory and current goings on of that silliness.
Nope.
I'm here to offer a brief word on mother fucking Madonna. The goddess of modern pop.
Hours ago I decide to snatch up her four albums from the 1980's. Starting with her self titled debut and continuing on with Like a Virgin, True Blue, and Like a Prayer. I decided to listen to each album in it's entirety and in chronological order. This journey kicks off with Lucky Star, a good omen for the three plus hours of music that is coming. Three hours that includes all of her most famous and popular songs. In between lies yummy morsels of music fueled by catchy hooks on a foundation of energetic electronic beats and saturated in provocative lyrics that celebrate and embrace strong, independent, unapologetic sexuality from an innovative woman who knew what she wanted and did not allow the pressure of sexist societal norms deter her from a devotion to fully express herself and not allow oppression to distract or prevent any pleasure she felt was worth her pursuit and encouraging a generation of young women to never be afraid to do the same. And the best part of it all is that the MUSIC FUCKING ROCKS! Track after track.
Madonna has always been little more than background figure in my own history with music. A prolific icon of pop culture almost everyone will be somewhat familiar with songs like Material Girl, Like a Virgin, and Papa Don't Preach and I think many people, most of whom are probably men, are content to be limited this most basic familiarity. That's what I've always done. But tonight I listened.
And now I'm a massive fan just starting to scratch the surface of an amazing woman and her awesome art.
So yeah. Madonna...So Good.
