Greetings to my faithful followers, loyal friends and random stumble uponers from Las Vegas, Nevada, the one truly 24-hour city in the world. Seriously... virtually anything you can do during the day here, you can also do at night.
In this homework topic, @missy and @rambo want to know...
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I'm a software test engineer for an international software professional services company. We secure software development, quality assurance and software services to companies worldwide. Some of our clients are Mozilla, Snap-on Tools and the Holstein Association (yes, cows). One of my past clients was Fanatics, a sports apparel and memorabilia company.
My company opened an office in Las Vegas (Henderson actually) in July 2015. I was the second person to accept an employment offer. The guy who sent his in first left the company more than a year ago, making me the longest serving person at our Henderson office.
Ever since I fell into a software testing job in 2002, I've loved the job. I love trying to break the software, to make it better for whoever buys and uses it.
And the company I work for now? It's great. They let me work remotely for 3 weeks last year so I could be with my parents while my dad underwent and recovered from surgery to remove a carcinogenic tumor. We have no office politics. Everyone gets along (for the most part). I get to test things I've never had the opportunity to test before: mobile apps, websites, and soon, a bluetooth torque wrench and accompanying mobile app.
Here's an example of what I do...
I'm temporarily assigned to a project for the Holstein Association. Yes, as in Holstein dairy cows. We are building them a custom website application as well as a simple, read-only mobile app. The web app is quite complicated. In addition to manual testing, I'm writing automated test cases using Cucumber and Java. Anytime the developers make a code change to their master branch, my automation system, which uses TeamCity, kills the web app service, builds it, restarts the web app service, and runs the automated tests I wrote (and am still writing). Along the way, I've had problems to solve, some of which were really difficult, but eventually I was able to find a solution.
That's what I love most about my job: I get to learn all kinds of new things and it's challenging.
Thanks for reading.
