It's hard to know what to say anymore about New Orleans. Both the devastation and the incompetence on display are stunning.

This is my favorite city in America. I have been there a half-dozen times, and twice in the last 2 years, including last April. I have long described it as America's true Holy City. As belonging to another planet. As where I'd go if I dropped out of life, reemerging on Bourbon Street playing bass in a Raggae band. It's the only place I've ever been where I instinctively know my way around without getting lost.

And now, for all intents and purposes, it's gone. It may be back - I hope and pray for it to come back - but it's gone for now.

The sheer negligence evident by FEMA and the Bush Administration is nothing short of criminal. Will anyone lose his job? Not likely. Will people decide that maybe a smaller government with lower taxes is not always the best way to go? We'll see. But New Orleans is Exhibit B for what a Republican goverment will get you. Exhibit A, of course, is the war on Iraq.

To any of you out there who have been displaced or lost homes or family, let me know if you need anything specific that I can send. I've given through the Red Cross, but the need is so great I'm sure a lot falls through the cracks. My heart goes out to you and your truly great city.
