I've been in something of a daze the last few days, but that's a story for another blog.
I'm really starting to wonder when I'll see a movie that features the story of a young, 20-something modern woman who becomes inspired to take on the world in one way or another (usually defying conventions! *gasp*) that won't feature a brief arc in the story in which she and her boyfriend/husband/lover begin to fight because she's:
a) never around
b) their sex life has taken a hit
c) they're in financial distress as a direct or indirect result of her
d) or ... some fourth scenario (I'm sure there are a couple more)
... only for him to abandon the relationship for what appears to be only that reason, be it for a few days or a stright-out divorce.
It just seems to be the one true cliche of this kind of story, even when it's based on true events. Yes, changing the status-quo leads to tension, especially in a realationship. Yes, it can be a powerful moment when she's put in a position of chosing between a lifelong dream, goal, politics, students, career, etc. or the man in her life but too often the guy's position is glazed over and someone who started out supportive, maybe even being the one who pushed her into the first or second step on the path suddenly has his bags packed and says, "yeah, I'm leaving now, because I'm suddenly a selfish nay-sayer. Byeeeeee!"
I've not been exposed to a whole slew of this type of story, mind you, just the ones I've seen over the last few years, but they all follow those elements at almost the same time, usually around the middle-to-the-end of the second act. So maybe I'm talking out of my ass but I'll never know!
I don't know what I'm getting into, here. I'm really tired and just writing thoughts to change up my blog a bit. Enjoy.
