I ran into an OLD friend the other day. Not old as in she's 86, old as in I haven't seen her in about 3 years. I remember her with short, spiky bleach blonde hair. She was a silly girl, and by far one of the coolest people I think I ever met.
I go to Subway for lunch yesterday, and behind the register is this familiar face, framed with beautiful short, brown hair, and topped with the obnoxious green Subway hat. I can't help but think I know that face from somewhere, and I just can't place it. It doesn't really bother me, until I get to the register, and she starts asking me about my food. I know that voice, too. Now I'm bothered. I look at her nametag as I reach for money to pay for this transaction. It hits me like a bag of bricks hits a monkey hurling through the air to attack. You don't forget a name like Leilani.
I tell her I know her, and re-introduce myself to her. She remembers only vaguely (she was a bit of a drughead). She tells me that her life has changed a lot, and that now she's a christian. It doesn't phase me because I don't care about what anyone believes, but she still sticks in the phrase: "I'm Happier now, so it works out."
I leave Subway, for my lunch break is short, and I'm already pushing the envelope. We say goodbye, and I go about my merry way.
