welp, i just got an email from my mom. she landed in vancouver not too long ago and is heading to kelowna tomorrow. i left a message at her friend's place (in east van, which seems to be our family's natural habitat) so hopefully she'll get in touch tonight and get my address off me.

for a little background, i am - or was until the aforementioned arrival - the only one of my brood on the continent. my mother, father, and sister all live in china and the only other person who would have my last name married a guy named Ennis. the rest of the extended family is distributed throughout the Budds and Carmichaels, with a scattering of other names throughout quebec, florida, and the midwest. half french, half scottish, all man.

moving back into my own personal genealogical neighbourhood, my sister was the first. she was living in ottawa, then got her TESL certificate, then got the hell out of dodge. it's been years since chantelle hauled off to china. last i heard she was going steady with a ninja - i shit you not, dude is hardcore. then, in january of 2003 my father's wanderlust finally overcame him. he was qualified to teach on whichever continent he felt like, so hell, why not mosey on down the silk road a ways. it took him fifty or so years to let the kerouac cat out of the bag (for the sake of clarity, he and my mother had been separated for a long long time before that. he didn't ditch us or anything, not that time at least). he's always been an artist and a writer, so it fits him. canadian landed immigrant yank ex-pat in a foreign land full of small, dark people with plenty of stories to tell. for him it must be heaven, with rice wine.

continuing on the trend, sometime last year the mom - who has always been a gypsy - joined the crew en chine and i was left as the last of my clan. i felt like a mohican... or a highlander... or something. i still steadfastly refuse to even visit china on the principal that at least one of us four should put down roots and make it in the straight world. there's got to be one in every family, even a family composed entirely of hippie visionaries. just you watch.

off topic, or maybe just onto a new one, there was the craziest freak rain storm just now. instant downpour on a hot, sunny kelowna evening. huge droplets that got to the point of stinging on impact. Posh and i ran out to frolick and found that roommate robin was already out there doing his thing. even stoic tavis from downstairs joked out his kitchen window. it was nice.

on that note, back to the glowing screens... namely pay-per-view movies on digital cable. someday i'll look back on this part of my life as the beginning of the end; the time when i no longer had to even get off my ass to rent a movie robot skull
