I am doing something different. I am doing something creative.
The smell woke him, the smell of oranges, he woke with a start. He looked around and there was Megan, she had made tea with orange zest, and oatmeal. This breakfast was at 6PM as they would leave at nightfall.
He got up and went to the entrance between the rocks and with the binoculars scanned the horizon slowly and with purpose. He could see some dust from the road far off beyond the crest of the hill. It did not bother him, as traffic was scarce at this time of day, and almost non exisant until the wee small hours, by that time they would be far away.
Megan and he ate in silence. They packed thier backpacks and rested. As night fell they started on their southwesterly course. This was the third night they were doing this, each night they had a certain couse to travel and someone had thought their track out well. They were crossing the desert on the hardpack, staying away from the soft sands which would drastically slow their progress.
They may have to walk a few miles extra but they always made their next stop in time. Their stops always were well hidden from view and had a small cache of food and water. Both he and Megan had no idea why they were going in the opposite direction of the water or the border, but they did not ask why, they knew there was a bigger plan in play and they would find out what it was when the time required.
Walking across the desert was not as hard as they thought, with the clear starlite skies and full moon, it was like walking twilight. The only problem was at night the desert cooled off quickly and they kept moving as they only had light jackets.
That is the first part of my story
