Just over a week to go. Wonder who I'll have in my classes.
I hope things will work well. I've got a feeling I'm going to have quite a few people drop from my classes. But that's ok. These should not be easy classes.
This time I'm doing something different. Before, I've coddled students along, going over everything they should have learned in high school. This time, I'm going to outline the things I think they should know by now (complex sentence structure, paragraphs, simple grammar and spelling) and tell them "if you can't handle this, I suggest you take the remedial English class that is available."
I've run out of patience for students coming unprepared to college. Some of the blame lies in the high schools, but some of it lies in students trying to scam the system into making a class easier.
I'm teaching formal writing, essay-craft, and critical thinking. I am not baby sitting.
I will, however, break anyone who hurts one of my students.
