Off to the DC area for the weekend, to work on getting my driver's license. I am just gonna be in town for 2 days, and I am less than psyched about going.
However, winter is coming up, and waiting for the bus when it's freezing out is even less thrilling.
I am still not sure if I can justify how much it makes sense to drive a car when gas is so expensive and taking care of the environment is so crucial. But I think having one, just to drive around my neighborhood (i.e. to the grocery store) wouldn't be a big deal. I would still take the train into Center City most of the time, though.
Also... well... at the age of 24, it sometimes feels a little bit embarrassing that I have never had a driver's license before. What can I say? I've always lived in cities and had other priorities. Taking public transportation is more economic and environmentally sound.
But when I started living alone, I realized that it's nice to have a car when you get groceries. I've had other solutions: when I go to the close one, it's just a $5 cab ride to my apartment, and there's always a cab in front of that grocery store. When I go to the health co-op I belong to, I get a free ride home from one of the members. It's never the same member, it's just whoever happens to be going in the direction of my place.
