Naturalism is a digression in the worlds arta potentially dead-end branch in an art tree otherwise filled with icons and symbols. From cave painting to the great Mayan sculptors, we humans want to translate our world into pictographs in order to communicate visually.
Where is this communication currently the most complex and sophisticatedand I mean sophisticated in a way that is understood by the receiver? Right now I think it is advertising. As creepy as it sounds, I think the advertising and branding space is our most vital and progressive art media(um). Branding probably deserves its own discussion, and I think any serious painter who hasnt taken the time to learn how and why branding works is singing facing the back of the stage.
Brains are brains, and if you want to impress upon them, youll speak their language. Thats the short version of identity design/branding.
I also think that since we tend to relate to exterior objects and conditions primarily symbolically, and training our perception to resist that shortcut is a huge step forward in terms of our personal power and affect on the world. Is that too much ninja for now?
