Back in the City, back from the death that is the flu, back from SGCHI bowling.
Back at work.... endlessly.
Thinking about how public protest is often fruitless.... Always seems to be ignored or spun in a way that draws away from its message. Look at those dirty punks, they can't know anything. Or here in Chi with the hundreds of police who come to keep the peace.... Which then makes headlines that there are more police than protesters. Aren't we a happy city!
Think of the riots in the 60s. Who started the violence? Rabble rousers? Plants? Why did the Chicago 8 become the Chicago 7?
Anyway, where this is leading.... Public demonstration does not work as an effective political force because it is too easily dismissed. Dismisal comes from the media projecting their bias, gov't spining about it, or by association. The wildest most out-there protester gets the photo. For example - see the Raleians. I kept seeing them represented by the same image of people laying on the floor quivering in the 80's or some weird old man with a HUGE beard. He became "The Ralein" He and Rael, of course.
Then also, your message can be changed by those around you who are speaking at your gathering. This is where the Rable rouser element comes in...He who speaks with the most extreme message gets the sound byte that "is" your protest. Hitler changed the platform of the National Socialists by speaking differently and denouncing other party memebers in his book. So you become implicated by those who participate, join, or modify your movement...
Then there is always the concern of the Plant. It only takes one bottle to turn a peaceful protest into a riot. Anyone could throw it. Public protest means anyone can come, anyone can destroy your message by destroying your peaceful protest and turning everyone against you for their own political reasons.
Or how to dissassociate yourself from the negative entirely, This is part of the greatness of MLK Jr.
So, in order to control the way you are perceived or the message you send... Art?
Havel? Beaumarchais? Any of the Greeks? Agit Prop? Reifenstahl - "Triumph of the Will?" For whatever message, it seems to work decently...
Is there anything to this or am I just rambling...

what about ghetto pac? you can't dissassociate yourself from negativity (i just read that part, i'm sorry i couldn't focus enough to read the whole thing, so i appologize if i'm taking this out of context) i mean, you can respond in a way that is peaceful yet effective, which i guess would be positive..but you're still reacting to negativite aspects of society or whatever it is you are responding to. i think it's hard to control the way you are perceived unless you are entirely clear and your audience, entirely attentive. as far as art, i'd like to say that is my best outlet. on the other hand, art is open to different types of interpretation, and most times, a viewer will associate it with something pertaining to their life, or values, etc. not necessarily what you are meaning to portray.
