The Moth Diaries (2011), Mary Harron

In this very modern re-telling of the story, “Carmilla”, Rebecca returns for another year at her boarding school, only to find that her best friend Lucie has a new best friend. Is Lucie being preyed upon or is Rebecca just jealous? Based on a novel of the same name, where the answer to the question is much more ambiguous (it’s pretty plain in the movie). While the trailers played up the supposed eroticism of the movie, there’s not much sexiness going on, just a good story of a young woman whose comfort zones are being removed, one by one. I found the movie very well done, the characters believable and relevant, with just enough weirdness to keep my interest.
