On another note, about this whole Nick Berg beheading thing..
I'm always down for the ghoulish. I'm a member of Rigor Mortis, I love horror movies, I always watch autopsy specials and all that stuff.
But I'm thoroughly disgusted to see that all these people want to see this video, for lurid reasons.
I will admit that it made me curious, so I did DL it. I watched it for about 2 minutes, when all that is going on are the killers reading from a piece of paper (and the sound was off). As I watched, I realized that I was going to watch a REAL man die. I felt like I was going to faint and throw up. I had a genuine physical reaction to the thought of viewing this.
I stopped it around 3 mins., so I didn't see anything.
I guess I just didn't think about it until I actually turned it on.
What pisses me off are certain sites that I won't name (so no one goes to them-if someone wants to see them I won't help in any way)-including porn sites, that are streaming this and making it available to DL, as if it were the latest SpiderMan movie.
Some people have said on the boards that they feel it is their "duty" to see it. No, it's not. This man's horrible death is being played as some sort of terrible spectacle, a freakshow.
People just want to see blood and something gruesome. When I see all these morons salivating over this and debating blood spill patterns and whether his head was sliced or sawed off (I'm not kidding-these are posts from this site) I feel so repulsed. Some of these may be real debates to as whether the tape is authentic or not, but it seems most are just interested in the gory details.
Something like this is one of the reasons I decided not be a journalist anymore. I have the talent and I know a lot of people. I'm sure you have all heard "If it bleeds, it leads" and all that. I just couldn't bring myself to prey on people and their emotions for the sake of a front-page story.
There are a few instances where I think graphic details are justified. For instance, anyone in OC has probably heard about the Haidl gang-rape case and trial. For those who don't, basically some idiot teenage guys (one of whom is the son of an assistant sheriff) decided to gang-rape a 16 year-old. Oh, and they videotaped it. Oh, and she was UNCONSCIOUS. Check out the newest issue of OC Weekly or the web site. Today's story was very disturbing, as it described the contents of the video. They raped her not only with their bodies, but also with apple juice cans, snapple bottles, lit cigarettes and pool cues. They dropped her flat on her face a few times and she peed herself while unconscious. There's so much more that I can't even begin to tell you. These guys actually had the balls to show it at a high school party, bragging. Some people thought she was a corpse and turned the tape into the police. And what's worse is that this girl is some poor chick from Riverside and these guys are all filthy fucking rich. Not rich as in "I drive a BMW in high school" but rich as in "My dad has a fleet of private planes and is friends with high-powered politicians". The defense attorneys are doing their damnedest to paint this girl as a slut who wanted to be a porn star. They're pulling every trick out of the book to get these imbeciles off.
With something like the Haidl case, I can see why graphic details are helpful. They might be so shocking enough to spur people into outrage amongst citizens. The judge would know this and hopefully would give those fuckers their just desserts. A perfect example- when I told my boyfriend about this months ago, he was disgusted, but forgot about it. After he read the article in the latest OC Weekly, he was furious and horrified that the Register or the Times have really not had any real coverage of it. He actually called me up later to say it was still on his mind and that he would be following it more closely. The article stated that after the viewing, jurors glared at the defendants, looked visibly shaken, shook their heads and became physically ill.
But this is not the case with the Berg murder. This kid's death is being broadcast all over television and the Internet. How terrible that his last moments will be replayed over and over again, so a bunch of sick fucks can laugh at it like it was a horror movie.
I think he deserved better than that.
