I'm so depressed I want to kill myself...

I'm surprised how often I've seen statements similar to this in blogs on this site. I've had my share of bad, well, horrible days when dark thoughts like that have crossed my mind. But I've never seriously considered checking out forever. Although, my recent Christmas day dumping did result in radical weight loss and I hope to remain my rather svelte "break up weight" for as long as possible.

Anyway, I really feel for anyone who has trouble dealing with whatever obstacles life throws in the way. Since I always seem to end up being the one who talks friends through bad times, I thought I'd offer a few things to help out. First, a quote...

"We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same." - Carlos Casteneda (American author, 1925-1998)

Let that one sink in.

Now, if you are really on the edge, you have to call 911 and get help.

Serious help.

I do find that talking to a good friend can be as good as talking to a therapist. But the really good friend is not going to simply buy into agreeing with your version of events in your miserable story. A really good friend, and they are rare, will challenge you to take responsibility for your actions and then take action to get well, no matter what the circumstances. In fact, the friends I like to talk to are the ones that will listen, then tell me I'm full of shit or that I should go fuck myself. It's tough to hear, but often that is exactly what I need to hear to shake out out of it.

Someone who fits in the really good friend category passed this book along to me years ago called 30 Days to a Better Life.

This quick read is filled with helpful stories and exercises to get you back to normal and, more importantly, on the road to "happy."

Each chapter covers something to get you to think and you can simply read one a day. Anyway, I recommended it to a friend who was hurting recently and then realized that it was out of print and can't be found anywhere, even used. So I scanned the whole book and posted it in my my photo album section here. (You can launch the album and print out the pages, which is easier than reading it online.)

If you know anyone who would benefit, please point to the book.

I know that taking the first step in coming back from a deep depression is a tough one. I've been there a few times and this book helped me bounce back quick. Now I hope it helps you.

I won't say have a good day, but I will suggest you have a better one.

And feel free to pass the link to this along to anyone you think might need help. smile
