I just found an old, old notebook. I used to write a lot. Here's the kind of shit I was writing when I was 12:
Once there was a boy named Farnley who had a big sister named Hattings. They lived together in an old ugly house on Wharf Street where the neighborhood cats were so overpopulated that no one came there on vacation because they were afraid of catching some sort of strange disease. The town they lived in was very small and dirty, mainly because the only place in town for people to work was the huge pulp mill.
It was 5:26 on a Saturday evening in April when Farnley came crashing in the front door screaming "Hattings! Hattings! Look what I found!"
"What is it?"
"I don't know. It looks like some sort of box."
"Let me see it." Hattings grabbed the box from Farnley and looked at it closely. It was as big as her fist and covered with pretty purple paper. She ripped it open and found nothing but an old, ugly rock.
"Hey!" Farnley yelled. "No fair! I expected a surprise, and all I got was a crappy rock. Life sucks."
"Farnley," Hattings said. "Look at the bright side of things. At least it wasn't dog dung."
"Well, if it had been dog dung at least that would have been exciting. A rock is so boring. A rock is so damn boring."
"Farnley! Watch your mouth! What's happened to you? Why are you this upset?"
"Because! Life gets your hopes up and then throws them down the drain like they're worthless. A damn rock is no surprise for someone who deserves a present."
"What makes you think you deserve a present?"
"I work my ass off-"
"Stop cussing."
"I work my butt off so we can get enough money to survive without people findinh out mommy and daddy left us. I have to work as a Soap Boy down at the mill, which is not fun in the least."
"Oh yeah, Farnley? Well, let me tell you who deserves a present. I work too, you know. I have to run errands for old Mr. Getter and then I have to come home to a little brat like you. I also have to do the shopping and cook the meals."
"Boo hoo."
"Why are we fighting?"
"Something to do with a rock."
"Pretty stupid, huh?"
"All of us humans are."
"Forgive and forget?"
"Ok."
Wow. How did I already know that life has a tendancy to screw you over?
