I think I'm going to puke

I've eaten tooooo many pancakes. Today is Pancake Day. I've been told that American's don't know what Pancake Day is... so, I shall elaborate.

Every year there is Shrove Tuesday. This is the day before Ash Wednesday. I won't go in-depth into the religious significance of this because I'm an atheist. But, basically Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is a Christian period of fasting; for 40 days and 40 nights. It's to remember Moses' journey through the deserts. And pancakes were basically Moses' and his followers last meal before they embarked on their journey.

So, because Britain is a mainly Christian country we have Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday). British pancakes are very very different to American pancakes.

They're thin and about 3 times as big and less 'cakey' than American pancakes. They're more like French Crepes. (As a side note, American pancakes are called Scotch pancakes here).

We traditionally eat these yummy things this time of year smothered in lemon juice and sugar.

Or, you can be greedy like me and eat them with so much ice-cream you turn into a oink and puke

There are quite a few traditions associated with Pancake Day, all over the UK.

In the village I grew up in as a child the tradition was to go to the top of a large hill (called conger hill) and put your ear to the ground. If you put your ear to the ground at midday you could hear the local Witch frying her pancakes ready to eat as accompaniment to the children. Then we would go home and eat pancakes. It was a tradition that was about 300 years old. It surely haunted me as a child.

Nowadays, I am grown up and not living in that area anymore. So, I just stick to making my pancakes at home.

I suck at making pancakes.

Some more reading on the phenomenon of Pancake Day (including the traditional british recipe and some pictures):

Pancake Day 2
Pancake Day 3
Pancake Day 4
Pancake Day 5

Now, please excuse me while I puke

Note to self: don't eat so many next year

I've been out of the loop for a few dayssurreal

I have my own tradition called Pop-Tart day . I don't know if they have Pop-Tarts in England so I'll give you the scoop . They're cheap little mass produced breakfast pastries that you put in the toaster . I have a day where I eat only Pop-Tarts . The significance of this is to comemmerate the fact that I can't afford to buy REAL food!!!! frown

I hope your pancake binge hasn't caused you any permanent damage . biggrin
