June

"Tickets Please."

The conductor disturbed my train of thought. After presenting the young gentleman with the coloured piece of card which assured him I had paid to travel on these lines I resumed the activity of watching the trees, fields and sheep rushing by. It seemed as though they were late.

Although, it's not the scenery moving but the train. This may seem obvious to you, but how can I be moving so fast yet feel so still?

It was a hot day. A sunny day. A June day. The air conditioning in the carriage replaced the feel good swipe of the summer air. It was a relief, though. Sometimes it's nice to take a break from the sweltering heat and exhaustion that accompanies such days.

Little brick boxes passed through my aimless stare. A burnt out hotel there, a building site here. All of it was important scenery on my way home. I say home, but it wasn't really.

I hadn't felt at home for twenty years. Not if I was truthful with myself.

The town spread over the rises and dips of the landscape, creating its memories yet changing with time. I knew this place; not that I wanted to. I didn't want to remember. Memories have a habit of resurfacing at the mere sight of that old burnt out hotel where we had spent our first night together. All those years ago.

"What's bothering you, sir?"

Where had this meddling fool come from? There were plenty of empty double seats in the carriage, yet he insisted on sitting next to me.

I told the creature how he shouldn't ask such personal questions of strangers. I don't think he heard me because he asked again.

"Tell me your troubles."

I explained to the creature that he was quickly becoming one of the very troubles he spoke of. Again, he seemed to not hear me. But perhaps he just wasnt listening.

"It's ok, I know what you're thinking, but I'd rather you told me so I don't have to force my way in."

Who was this? What did he want with my troubles?! Becoming frustrated I turned away and continued to observe the Landscape's journey through my window.

"Your home will be passing by shortly."

"It's not my home. Not any more." I was falling for the creature's trap. Falling for his unforgiving quest to hear my troubles.

"Forgive me sir, but I believe you're mistaken."

"You don't know anything of the sort."

The town continued to pass me by. The sun beat down onto my favourite bar as it flashed through my gaze. It was gone in a second. In a second I had lost my life to the powers of seduction.

Everything was so familiar. The way the streets meshed into one another, creating a network of veins carrying the cells to their destinations. The very life force of the town going about their business and daily tasks; just like they always have. Just like they always will.

I had felt empty without this very landscape for the last 20 years of my life. The very smell of the sky and the colours of my memories. Painful to my heart they stabbed at my eyes.

"You could go back to her, sir."

I had hoped the creature would leave me be. How hideous must his meddling mind be to continue to bother me in such a way? I didn't turn my head.

"She misses you, sir. She misses you like you miss the touch of her skin."

"She would never forgive me. Why would she forgive me when I'm unable to forgive myself?" The creature was right. The pains of temptation reassumed their position at my side. I had brought it upon myself and destroyed the heart of the most beautiful being I had met. She deserved better. I left her twenty years ago to find herself a mate that would not break her.

The old streets of my neighbourhood had awoken the demons and brought them to the seat at my side. I saw my home.

"Go back, sir. Now is the time to combat your troubles and put them to rest."

I turned to ask the creature how he knew. How could he possibly know of the seduction I had fallen for? How I had smashed her glass heart into so many crystal shards that streaked her delicate face?

But I was too late. The seat next to me was vacant. I gazed up and down the aisle of the carriage. The creature was gone.

Left behind was the pungent smell of regret.
