Everyone else has said a lot of what I would say. I would just add that living with ANYONE is extremely difficult. It takes a lot of patients, understanding and open honest communication from both people. If you think you will resolve your problem easier living together, you may be in for a rude awakening.
This is only a theory and I havet had a chance to try it yet. I think a good test might be to take two long weekends. With the first, do something he loves but you dont like to do. The second weekend, do the opposite. I think it would demonstrate each persons level of maturity and willingness to compromise, and how much they are willing to put the other persons interests ahead of their own. I'm not saying this would tell you much about what life would be like living with the other person so much as this might be a way to learn a great deal about each other that you might otherwise not have already discovered.
And please don't forget the sunscreen! You may think this is silly, but it is very insightful.

I love the VW and would have gotten one if I could have, but as lovable as they are, they are hell to repair. Expensive (German parts only!) and take a long time.
It's a toss-up between the Yaris and the Fit, really. The biggest deciding factor for me was that the guy at the Honda dealership was a douche and said that no one could test drive a Fit because they couldn't keep any on the lot fast enough, so I should just trust him that they handle well and pre-order. Bullshit. I got the 4-door Yaris and I love it to death. I can drive for 500 miles on less than a tank of gas, and the service and warranty are unbelievable. I can't say enough good things about it.
