(8/9/05 update- ...also, recommend things to mix with vodka for me. Specifically- not acidy fruit juices. I know orange juice is good, but it's acidy. Thanks.) Book recommendations w specific references to people on my Friends list for books released in the last months of this year....
Kay
Folk Hats by Vicki Square- designs for knitting various hats
On the Ice: An Intimate Portrait of Life at McMurdo Station, Antarctica by Gretchen Legler- this one was under gay lit cuz it's supposedly about a woman (Gretchen) who falls in love with another woman at McMurdo.
Morgan
Pregnancy and Power: A Short History of Reproductive Politics in America by Rickie Solinger- yep: it's about those political topics
Baghdad Burning by Riverbend- a young woman blogs about life in the not-so-funnest city in the world. Some very good insights into real life there.
NoControl
The Truth (with Jokes) by Al Franken- more of his stuff
VeganYenta
La Dolce Vegan by Sarah Kramer- a guide to livin' veg'
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A Man without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut- I seriously thought he was dead, for some reason... I thought he'd died a few years ago... nope, he is still around writing essays about govt. clowns and such, and this book compiles some of those essays.
Spalding Gray: A Life Interrupted- Compiles some remaining monologue pages found, and features tributes to Spald by a bunch of people like Eric Bogosian and Eric Stolz.
there's a bunch of John Lennon books coming out; I saw at least 3, besides bios by Cynthia Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Francois Truffaut at Work by Carole LeBerre- this is a big ol' $70 photo-filled coffee-table book by Phaidon about the dude's movies n stuff.
Full Metal Jacket Diary by Matthew Modine- the actor kept a diary on the Kubrick film; gives you some insight into Stanley's work and the book is to be issued with a metal jacket, apparently (with laser-stenciled issue numbers on the cover).
