A couple more thoughts about Eno (not that I promise to "finish up"; in fact, I LOVE his appendix on Duchamp and might very well use it in here SOON):
-- He made a set of flash cards with rules/directions on them to use in the studio, as far back as his 1970s Talking Heads work. I belieeeve I first read about them in a Talking Heads book (by David Gans) but it might be buried in this A Year With Swollen Appendices; anyway, they have instructions on them like "Do more of what you started out doing", or "Try the same thing, working backwards"...I'm coming up with lame versions here, but they're really cool, and I thiiink they were mass-produced for purchase, and if anyone could xerox em for me I'd kill a man/woman for you. Thanks! (Before I KILL AGAIN, perhaps I should look around the net for them first...)
-- In No Irish- No Blacks- No Dogs, John Lydon said a similar thing about English folk not tolerating people rising above station. He coudn't stay friends with his poor friends because they kept giving him crap about being famous/wealthy, so he had to sever some relationships. (One of the STRANGEST things in Lydon's book was his story of why he stopped being friends with Souixsie. He says she invited him over to see a washer/dryer set she'd bought, and he figured she was shallow because of that so he stopped talking to her! I'm against consumerism too, but it seemed a little...extreme...maybe it was a REALLY GOOD washer?)
I was just watching physicist Joao Magueijo on Book TV. He wrote a book about the speed of light perhaps not being constant. Physicists can account for the creation of the universe back to one second before the big bang, but before then things get fuzzy. He got the idea that maybe the intense heat/pressures of the big bang caused everything to shoot out faster than the speed of light for the first nanoseconds of existence.
Of course, he went off on a lot of ideas I could barely grasp, and some I forget...the important thing, as usual, is the subsequent questioning of our CURRENT theories if variable speed of light (aka VSL) is so. If the speed of light can shift, the stability of any constant in physics can come into question.
It's funny, I was thinking that if black holes bend light, then surely its speed is changed, and light speed would be proven to be changable...but then gravity is having an influence. Perhaps that doesn't count...
Magueijo chuckled about the infamy of when his theories (which are in book form, Faster Than the SPeed of Light, for laypeople) came to him; when he was hungover. He's Portuguese, and has an adorable way of saying hangover-- "hen-GO-ver". He is also really, really, really, really sexy. I hope the book jacket photo shows this...
