I hate to sound drippy about a band I just started listening to this year, but...
Was a great show last night.
With all the feel of a farewell show, complete with pre-show short film (well, more like a bad Powerpoint presentation) of pics of the band interspersed with pictures of flowers in fields... and waterfalls... and seagulls arching through the clouds. Hmmm.
I was just hoping they'd do "Tractor Rape Chain" and "Glad Girls" so I could jump up and down like a 6-year-old girl. They did (and I did). They also did "Cut-Out Witch," "Shocker in Gloomtown," and "A Salty Salute" (with a fan who jumped onstage and sang the entire song with Bob; kinda unfair, since a young lady who'd just tried to add backing vox to "Watch Me Jumpstart" was bouncered offstage... although, granted, her and her friend were allowed to dance around behind Bob during the entirety of "Cut-Out Witch").
In a farewell show, you always hope for a second encore (as lame as encores are to begin with, but that's another day's Journal's philosophy), but really there's nothing else they should end with this tour besides "I Am a Scientist":
I am a scientist, I seek to understand me,
all of my impurities and evils yet unknown;
I am a journalist, I write to you to show you
I am an incurable
and nothing else behaves like me
And I know what's right,
but i'm losing sight of the clues
for which I search and choose
to abuse,
to just unlock my mind,
yeah, and just unlock my mind
I am a pharmacist, prescriptions I will fill you;
Potions, pills and medicines to ease your painful lives
I am a lost soul,
I shoot myself with rock & roll;
The hole I dig is bottomless
but nothing else can set me free
And I know what's right,
but I'm losing sight of the clues
for which I search and choose
to abuse,
to just unlock my mind,
yeah, and just unlock my mind
I am a scientist; I seek to understand me
I am an incurable
and nothing else behaves like me
Everything is right;
Everything works out right;
Everything fades from sight
because that's alright with me
