Okay, so my trip... I hesitate to describe it cuz it might sound like we "didn't plan much to do"-- we didn't. There is no Detroit disco nightlife that could compare to Whiskey's DVD and CD collection anyway... and the dude's vinyl record collection is starting to look like all the ones I bought and didn't buy when I was in high school!

Monday- EconoLodge sucks. Broadcast TV, a couple of cable stations and a bunch of HBO is all fine and good when there's a movie worth a shit on... otherwise, could I at least find one lousy baseball game to kill time?? I'm not a sports suckass or anything, but no ESPN is a little extreme when you just wanna baeball game to save you from sitcoms... at least Ali G came on. Memo to self- bring more reading material on the road.

Tuesday- Since the drive was indeed not long enough to merit a motel stay, I got into Oregon way too early. I tried to find this art museum, but the city of Toledo was busy excavating a 3-mile moat around it via jackhammering up various roads... so I hung out in the library reading Dr. John's autobio for a couple hours. I need to finish that thing someday; New Orleans, 1950s, that's the real musical carnival deal right there.

Dusty and I went out and made noise long into the night... well, not that long, but just as well. We needed a drummer and more equipment.

Wednesday- Got some musical equipment. Fender 65 W amp, Line 6 Fuzzpuking Barney wave modulator... came close to buying Squire Tele... but ya know, can't go all crazy at once, is my motto... well, maybe "I love big girl ass" is my motto. "Don't buy too much musical equipment at once" would be a close second.
That night we jammed on a larger scale. Some computer man playing metal hinges with a mike and a Mac. Whiskey's gtr teacher (I think) on guitar and sax. Drummer doing drums and guitar. Whiskey on bass 'n drums (but no drum & bass). I was doing 33% PiL-Keith-Levene (not to trumpet my chump's guitarwank abilities) 66% let's-see-what-this-fuckin-amp-can-do noisefest. I tried to give space to the others; it was what I called "rhythm lead" and I certainly don't profess to outplay a guitar-teacher.

Mind you, the only people I could hear in the room was myself, Whiskey, and the drums. I was kinda sitting on my amp though. No chairs, no gtr strap.

Oh, and you don't need an e-bow if you have a killer effects pedal. Waste of $120... nah, I didn't buy one, don't worry.

I also saw footage of Karoli's one filmed show. It works in parts, but there was a failure of communication along the lines of Whiskey to his band, and from him to his brain. No, I'm not insulting him, it worked in spots but... there were some difficulties. He can explain, if you require. I like the singer.

Thursday - We saw the Toledo Zoo. They actually have more aquarium and less zoo than I thought, but pretty good gorilla set-up. We also tracked CHUD along the streets of Oregon... or CHOD, I should say. Cannibalistic Humanoid Overground Dwellers. No need to dwell underground in Oregon when you blend in. The hope is that they eat 14-year-old white gangstas on bicycles. Time will tell.

We also saw the very cool DVDs of The Jam (how great they were live... I mean without horn-section-interference), The Clash (my respect for them goes up again; contrary to Jon Langford's suggestions, they actually had been in a riot), and Style Wars (NYC grafitti @1980s).

Saw Salo and umm, god, what a horrific movie. The only sicker movie I've seen in my life is Ilsa the Wicked Warden. Oh, and John Lurie's... fishing show. Fishing with Tom Waits in Jamaica and Willem Dafoe in icy Maine. It works on some very static level of entertainment.

Friday morn - Caught a few odd videos on VH1 Classic. Weird '80s pop/ new wave shit I've never even seen before, and I thought I knew it all. Would be a perfect channel if they cut the freakin overlong commercial bumpers, but as it is it's pretty perfect.
Then the eight hours driving into rush-hour DC traffic... you knew that already...

CDs bought on trip-
1. Modest Mouse, A Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About-- I thought between the title and that it has a song called "Ohio" that it would be a good time to hear them finally... but I don't dig it. A bit too plod-strum-mope for me.

2. The Casual Dots-- Fine new Kathi Wilcox band, as mentioned in my previous Deerhoof-show Journal. Most of it is killer, a couple duds.

3. Spacemen 3 The Perfect Prescription-- Their concept album of all-drug songs, and I basically own all S3 on vinyl, but had gotten rid of this for some bad, fickle reason, so went ahead 'n bought it again. "Come Down Easy" is such a charmer- "1987/ all I wanna do is get stoned;/ all I want for you to do is/ take my body home".

4. The Mekons, Honkytonkin'-- Remastered by Quarterstick Records, as mentioned in my previous Mekons-show Journal. Sounds nice; the mining disaster song reminds me of Died Pretty rave-ups and GbV's "How's My Drinking?" via the Pogues. Very anthemic.

5. The Cramps, Psychedelic Jungle/ Gravest Hits-- Another trip back to high school; friend Corey owned them. This gets me off very much. This is my idea of GRUNGE, thank you.

oh, and today - Anchorman a very funny, extremely dumb and pointless movie. Very fun.
